I thought this was an interesting article, one we might want to put in the Tech Articles Section. It is similar to how Cadillac's do it, except only for the HVAC system.

1994-1997 Continental, Town Car, Mark VIII, Crown Vic/Grand Marquis, Taurus/Sable, and Explorer.

Make sure tempature is between 40 and 90 degress F before doing test to avoid false codes.

1) Set Ignition in RUN Position.

2) To enter self test, simultaneously press the "OFF" and "FLOOR" buttons, then release and within 2 seconds press the "AUTO" button. All segments will light up if self self test completes with no failures.

3) To exit Self-Test and save trouble codes, press the blue "COOL" button. OR to exit Self-Test and clear trouble codes, press the "DEF" button.

NOTE: After any work has been done completed on the climate control system, the self test should be re-run and exited by pressing the "DEF" button. This will ensure that any codes accidentally set during repair are cleared.
