I stand corrected: right there on page 220 in the 03 manual it says; In the event of battery failure, you can use your master key in the key cylinder located behind the driver's seat.

If you find it or find a way to get in the trunk please post the answer. I might be next.
 
I'm still not understanding why the key is not unlocking the trunk. It should unlock it regardless if the battery is dead.

I guess this changed for 04. Page 220 in the 04 is just a chart. And i can't find anything mentioning a key cylinder elsewhere.
 
I have a 2002. The manual is also diffrent. I know this may be a little cheesy but Ive seen those things that "jump" cars using the cig liter. Ive never used one or Im not sure if it even a good idea
 
I have used the cig lighter thing before...(not on an ls though)its slow but it works

That is exactly what I was going to say. You can get a cable that goes from one car's lighter socket to another's or, use the portable power source jump kit.

The ability to respond to unlock commands should be available in a short while, following the application of DC power through the lighter.

Is there, or isn't there a lock cylinder behind the driver's seat on the second generation LS?
 
Maybe check the rear area too, like on the rear shelf or something... Maybe the manual was referring to the driver's SIDE of the vehicle. I'm just throwing ideas out there, I have a gen 1 so I can't look
 
Could you hook a battery charger up under the hood anywhere? Like on the starter then ground it? Also I've seen some vehicles the have remote terminal hook ups. Running 2 wires from the battery to a location under the car with a pair of terminals mounted.
 
Yeah the portable jump start battery might do the trick.

I bought one of those small battery pack jumpstarters that plug into the cigarette lighter a few years back. Never got to try it for starting. But it will supply some power to the rest of the car so it may be worth a try to open the trunk. Mine does charge up when plugged in and I have left it plugged in when the engine is off, so at least it doesn't blow things up.

Does anyone have the '03 shop manual? Now I am curious if there really is a hidden trunk release somewhere or if the 03 owner's manual is wrong!

Also not on an 06. BTW, I checked and my 06 is a mechanical connection between the trunk key and lock. I'm pretty sure this is true of my 04 too, but I haven't checked it yet.
 
I bet that since the '03 was the new generation, Ford was going to put a remote key cylinder for the trunk where it's mentioned in the owner's manual but never got around to it and just left it in the owner's manual.
 
Ok guys I got in..

The master key in the cylinder is kind of correct, the methoid I used was a flathead screwdriver (Master Key) and unlatched the back seat, just like the other guy did in the other post I posted here. Took me 4 mins or so and did not break anything. =)

Now I have to figure out my ETC issue if it's the TBS or Coil

The sequence on the 2nd gen: key cylinder to electric connector to actuating cable to latch. Only true mechanical release is the emergency pull handle in the trunk as shown in the factory service manual.

I don't want to start an argument here, but the indicated page shows the mechanical activating cable that runs from the key lock to the trunk latch. You can see that it pulls on the latch exactly the same way as the emergency release cable does. The 03 may be different, I don't know and I don't have one. The 06 is mechanical. The electrical connection shown is for the alarm system to know that the trunk was opened by the key rather than someone forcing it open.

If you don't believe this, and you have access to an 06, then disconnect the battery and see if the key still works in the trunk. I can assure you that it will.

I gotta go with this guy. I can't see a car manufacturer (yes, even Ford), making a trunk useless if the battery dies. Who keeps jumper cables in their back seat??

My 87, 92 and 95 LSCs all had electric release trunks and all worked with the key when the battery was disconnected.

I can open my '03's trunk with the battery disconnected, had to do it to reconnect the battery when I let it sit overnight to reset the parking brake light.
 
I just checked my wife's 04 and it too has the mechanical cable to key lock and works without power. The 04 service manual that I have shows this just as the 06 manual on the net does.
 
Joegr I never saw this as an argument, I glade to find out the 04, like mine will work without power. Now I won’t have to disconnect mine and lose the radio presets and shift adapt that I was about to do. My misunderstanding. Styles must have other trunk/key issues other than dead battery on his 03.

I was wrong, first time this year. :shifty:
 
No problem, but I'm way ahead of you on times being wrong this year. Just ask my wife.
 
I guess that wasn't such a "stupid, easy question" after all, now was it? :D It's good to know that the engineers were actually wearing their thinking caps when they put the battery in the trunk, eh?
