On the way back from Atlanta, the car did a very weird thing. I was cruising along at 80 and all of the sudden it jerked or bucked - hard. Hard enough it felt like I ran over something.

I think it shifted out of OD or unlocked the torque converter for a moment, but it went right back to where it was -except of course at a lower speed. I got off the next exit and looked for any clues - nothing.

Seemed fine the rest of the way home but I was driving more reserved after that.

I think I may pull the tranny pan and rear cover from the differential and peek around.

Any thoughts or ideas?

My own car has a slight problem with the shifter that I haven't taken time to go after.

When I shift into D, even after it clicks in place there's still a little room (millimeters) for it to wiggle between the stops. I need to be mindful to nudge the shifter forward a bit because the car will downshift into 2nd gear if I pull it backward toward the manual 2 even without actually pushing the unlock button and clicking the shifter to 2. I probably just need to adjust the MLPS a bit.

You may have a similar problem.
While driving try wiggling your shifter back and forth to see if whatever happened before happens again.

I have verified the MLPS alignment before.

But I suppose something could be amiss. I know I have to push the shifter firmly forward in park to remove the key from the ignition, but I thought that only had to do with the ignition interlock.

I'll have to look into the shifter and MLPS.

I had that happen in my 1996. I was on the highway when all of a sudden, the tranny bucked as if it went into reverse real quick. It happened about two weeks after I did my J-mod- so I though something broke. Pulled the pan and v-body, and all the springs and things were in good order. It happened once, and never occurred again.

Six or so weeks later, I lost 3/4 in the tranny...

I think what happened to your guys's car (yeah bad grammar I know) is what happened to mine.

It would do that every so often, and then this happened: http://www.lincolnvscadillac.com/showthread.php?t=36545

No fix on it yet, but I also have recently changed the tranny fluid, and rewired the OD light.

Did you OD lights flicker with your problems? Mine did, with the CEL. I'm wondering if my 'fix' broke, and there's a short in the wires causing the OD to engage and disengage rapidly, causing massive failure somewhere.
