Hey just got my ceramic pads and D/S rotors from Rotor Works installed this weekend. Had a couple of questions for those of you that have done the D/S thing as well...

1.) Rear passenger side brake sqeakes a little when braking. Almost identical to the low pad indicator squeak. Will this eventually go away? Or is there something I should do to alleviate it?

2.) When I brake somewhat hard, say 65-15 mph (not slamming on the brakes) I get kind of a drone from my front rotors long about 30-20 mph. No vibration and no pulsation... Is this becasue of air collecting in the slots and heating up? Is this somewhat normal?

The brakes are only 5 days old, I don't really know what to expect... My LVC brothers and sisters enlighten me with your experiences!
 
Did you have them turned before you installed them ? That very well could be the source of the problems .I installed mine on my old 2000 LS and right away I had issues like yours . I was apparntly supposed to have them turned before install .Once done no prolems ever again .

You can have the rotors turned on the car ,alot of dealers will do it that way ....hope that helps
 
The drone could just be the normal sound the rotors make. Although it's often described as a whoosh. Slotted rotors do make that sound...

Also, anti-squeal pad dressing is always a good idea (it's somewhat like a contact cement for your brakes; prevents the pads from oscillating, which often times is where the squeal comes from).

And the machining of the rotors... some do require you to have them turned before use.

I agree with the dressing. Depending what pads you, some squeel when they are cold. For instance, Hawk Blue pads are racing pads. When they are cold they are soooooo loud, however when they are hot the braking power is amazing. Might be a factor in your situation.

-- Personally I would never go with drilled rotors because of the amount of problems they have. (cracking, splitting, noisy, less surface area.)

Lastly, Make sure your rotors are on the right direction :)
 
i just had EBC slotted and dimpled rotors put on my front and EBC red stuff pads all around, and at first they squeaked, but that went away, i figure it was the coating beaing worn off, but now they kinda hum when pressure is applied at low speed, i also figure that it is because they are slotted and dimpled...dont rightly know about your problem there...
 
Trust me man, its the anti squeak grease you use on the pad backing. I have been there. I have drilled/slotted rotots also, but with NAPA premium ceramix pads. Very slight drone--windows have to be open to hear it.
 
Mine is not a little hum. Braking somewhat aggressively from 60 or so down to a stop the drone starts at about 30-20 mph and gets louder until I let off the brake. Only from the front though, rotor works said nothing about having to have them turned before installation and the rear ones don't do it.
 
i have drilled slotted rotors and werent turned. they always made squeeling noise because the pads they send out suck. i had to buy posi-quiet ceramic pads and all problems stopped
 
hmmm, that's suspicious. i'm sorry i can't be much more help but i feel your frustration. it happens to all of us at one point or another. i was rolling around with brakes that squeaked so bad it embarrassed me to the core every time i hit the brakes. hope you get it fixed soon. if it makes you feel better i'm rolling around with my inside door handle broken. i have to open it from the outside everyday. haven't had a time to fix it, lol. good luck
 
hmm...thats odd...i have no idea why its doing that...have you been to a brake place and ran the problem by them to get their input?...send a message to QUIK LS or ILLS...they might be able to help a little better...
 
Thanks guys, I'll keep you posted on the progress. The squeak is still there, but probably some of that brake grease will od do the trick for that. My concern is the loud drone from about 30-20 when braking more than lightly. Also only from the front. I can feel the drone in my brake pedal as well, it is slight though.
Anywhoo- I'll let you all know, and anymore inout would always be appreciated!
 
I had bought drilled slotted rotors and the front ones would make a whirly drone on deceleration to a stop.
This was unacceptable to me on an LS so I just had my mechanic reinstall the original rotors and they're perfectly quiet.
Now really guys are any of us gonna rally drive the car hard enough where drilled slotted rotors would make a difference.
Left the rear ones though and they don't make any noise.
 
OEM rotors are hard to beat for quality and price. Over the years I have observed a number of members that return to OEM after unsatisfactory aftermarket drilled and slotted performance. Aftermarket brake pads seem to be another story.
 
I replaced my brakes, front/rear at about 70k; I BELIEVE there were original... Could have got maybe another 15k out of them. Were not in bad shape; I believe the issues are starting to be cleared up at OEM with shoddy rotors, and the LS is case in point. Factory rotors seem pretty good. There was a time, not all that long ago where factory rotors were almost a sure thing for warp-age... mattered not if it were a caddy(and GM), lincoln (and ford), CRYstler (dodge)... If it were made stateside, rotors were junk. Manufactures have came a long way. Also some of that can be attributed to better pads, larger brakes and lighter cars; all of which reduce heat issues and metal fatigue. But no doubt a lot of it comes from metallurgical advances and better engineering.

But on a side note; I sware by powerslot cryo treated rotors

I saw someone with a very nice set of wheels on their car and the rusted out OEM rotors and it almost took away from the look of the rim. I don't drive aggressively at all, but everything I read said that D/S rotors cooled quicker and were less likely to warp. They look cooler as well. I only paid 300.00 for all four rotors and ceramic pads. The seller had over 9000 positive feedbacks on the rotors. I couldn't get OEM rotors and pads for that. The answer seemed obvious.

Isnt that company only on ebay? Could you send me a link to them Ill be needing brakes soon. Never mind found it

typically everything that comes with the car,oem, will be better than aftermarket. If an after market part was better it would of came with the car. Dont take this as i am saying every part, but just your basic everyday use parts ex: rotors, tire size...etc. The car was built around all these different specific parts, dont change them. 2 cents.:)

I dont agree. ALL car makers will go with the most cost effective parts.
 
I agree with you aswell 95gt.

Automobile manufacturers are mass-producing on a much greater scale than an aftermarket supplier. Also, an aftermarket buyer is paying a premium for one unit and not a whole car's worth of units. Given a chance to compromise performance vs. cost and still be within safety standards a car company will take the lower cost anyday.

In a word, yes.
I will do drilled and slotted when funds permit, as the stock Ford stuff sucks.
I have put on not quite 20K miles, and I have warped a rotor, due to maybe even ONE hard stop. Once is all it can take.
I installed D/S rotors on my Ford p/u, and NEVER warped another rotor on it. I tow a 4K pound boat with it, and I give the brakes a real work out.
On the LS, I can tell you when the rotor warped. It was in a near panic stop, and they worked good, but only once from that speed(70 plus), slowing to a stop.
Now, I am very careful, because high speed stopping really vibrates...at least I know what it is.

HUH?
Not my experience at all, especially where brakes are concerned. Get a good name brand after market performance product, and it will almost always be better quality than OE stuff...my experience...
The manufacturers will always use the less expensive part, not the best part...that is for sure!
