Doing Fuel filter, interesting discovery.

Im replacing the fuel filter right now, and I've got the wheel well guard off. Between the guard and the door theres a layer of insulation (sound-proofing?) At the bottom theres a bunch of leaves and grass and dirt. It appears the insulation is holding moisture in, which I expect could lead to rusting. So Im going to clean that crap out, cut the bottom couple inches of insulation off and maybe spray the metal with a coat of primer or red paint.
What do you guys think?

This has come up before, lots. But not recently so good thing you brought it up! Heck, I had trees growing in mine :) I think just two screw-tabs hold it in place. I washed mine good and let it dry a couple days in the hot sun. Then I cut off about 3 inches.
 
Yeah, i removed those moldy things on mine and also the ones attached on the fender liners.
 
Well now Im having trouble getting the fuel filter out. I cant get that rusted clip off the top. Ive been trying at it with some needle nose pliers but cant get it off. The only tool ive got is this little blue piece of junk, but there's not enough room to slip it on there. It was the only thing available in any of the 6 auto parts stores I went to or called.

I had to shave a little off the last fuel line disconnect tool I got.
 
Get the scissor type fuel line tool and disconnect the bottom line first. Mine was also stuck pretty good to the top line, but once the bottom is loose, you can hold the filter with one hand and then insert the disconnect tool with the other by pressing it up into the connection as far as you can and wiggling it around a bit. To get the tool to "seat" as far up as possible, I used a screwdriver as a pry bar between the filter body and the tool and jammed it up inside the fitting until it stopped, then a little back and forth movement and it came right out.
 
Well I got it all done. In the end it wasn't the tool or any amount of force or plier work, but just some finesse with my fingers. Didn't leave my hands feeling too good, but it got the job done.

The new filter hasn't stopped the surging idle (surges from 550 to 850 rpm). So Ive still got the fuel pump, IAC valve, and possibly the air filter or MAF as potential culprits.

Have you tried cleaning the MAF?
 
Sounds like the dreaded IAC valve to me. I hear it is a pain in the A@! to get to near the firewall. I would try cleaning the MAF with the appropriate cleaner made specially for that, and it that does not work, the IAC would be next on my list. If the car is driving OK at part to WOT, it is likely NOT the fuel pump. Good luck.

Well most of the threads I read from people complaining about a surging idle had the engine surging all the way up to 1600+rpms, mine only surges to about 850rpms. Does this mean its more likely to be the MAF? or no?
