Difficulty with regulator clips

So, I pulled a good - used regulator to put in an 04 that I picked up, and found that the regulator clips were on their way out and should be replaced before installation. So I ordered some, got them in, and CANNOT get the things to go back on. It's like the cables are now ~1" shorter than they need to be to get them on.

I've seen a lot of posts on replacing them, but has anyone had trouble doing so? Thanks!
