Decreases in Horsepower

This isn't about just lincoln but all automakers. I've noticed that some cars that were rated at ex. 270hp in 2005 are now decreased to ex. 258hp. does anyone know what's going on?

my guess would be the trend with everyone wanting better gas mileage. probably decreased performance a bit or cut back fuel a bit. atleast that would be my guess.
