In general, when your problem is the DCCV, you will get heat out or one or both sides when you don't want it.
It sounds like you are getting non-cooled air out of one side instead of heated air. Since that side is the passenger side, the odds are good that your refrigerant is low.
Refrigerant isn't consumed, so if it is low then you have a leak. You should locate and fix the leak. Be sure to check the bottom of the AC compressor to see if it is damp with compressor oil. If it is, the leak is between the two compressor halves. If enough oil leaks out, then the compressor will flood the whole system with little metal bits. That's expensive to fix.
If there's no oil on the outside of the compressor, you can risk doing a recharge using one of those cans with the gauge on it. However, it would be better to take it to the dealer or a good AC shop and have the leak fixed and the AC correctly recharged.
