I know this is the place to ask this stuff. ;)

How long does the DCCV typically last in everyone's experience?

What time of year have you had them fail? (wondering if high ambient heat might increase failures, so possibly include your general location if not part of your profile.)

Does everyone simply replace with stock motorcraft or is there an aftermarket rebuilt version for cheaper, anyone ever try taking one apart to see about a repair?

Typically something people pick the boneyards for or is it best to just buy new?

What is the cheapest source folk have found for new ones?

Just changed mine on my '04 at just over 63000 miles. Just failed for the first time once we had our first couple 90F days outside here in north-central West Virginia. I got the new stock motorcraft replacement for $105 from rockauto. Since I have the old one here, I may very well attempt taking it apart to see what makes it tick.

Buy it new. There is no benefit to purchasing used. It will just fail also and you'll be replacing it again, soon. There seems to be no real pattern to failure. Like an alternator or water pump, it will fail when it fails. RockAuto or Max at 5-Star will be your best bet. AFAIK, there isn't an aftermarket part. My '06 had the DCCV fail with less than 18K, our '00 was (IIRC) over 125K.
 
I don't think temperature has anything to do with it. The one on my 04 failed at the end of winter. It was at 66K miles and about 3 years. Probably time is more of a factor than miles.
The main failure mode seems to be that it develops a slight leak of coolant into the solenoid coils. After a while, this corrodes the wires in the coil(s) and they open up and/or short out.
I think that someone on the forum has already dissected a failed valve and posted the results.
 
Just replaced mine. It lasted 4-5 years and 105k miles. Only one of the two solenoids failed.
 
The failure mode is almost always a leaking internal seal that allows the coolant to attack the solenoid coils. They start leaking slowly and get worse until you notice the symptom. Usually lack of A/C on one side of the car.

I took mine completely apart after failure and possibly could have changed the O-ring and reinstalled it. But the part is not too expensive and I hope they may have improved it over the factory original? Plus it's a bit of a chore to change. It has been one of the very few things that have failed after the 50K mile factory warranty was up. Changed it at around 65K miles. I am suspicious that not changing the coolant might be a contributing cause?

Mine recently (late April) failed on my '04 at about 40k miles.

It may be just a coincidence, but there does seem to be a pattern here that the OP's, joegr's, and mine all failed shortly after the winter months were over and outside temps warmed to the point that the colder air was being needed more often.
 
That's pretty much why I started the thread. Everything I've seen, Gen1takes longer to fail (it's a more expensive part too) and they do tend to go out once warmer weather starts occuring.

Wanted to collect as much data on it as I could. Yes, I'm a geek.

Everyone please add your experiences.

Rockauto is the one of the cheapest around so I wonder if the $175 is still a good deal?
 
The O/E part from ford is $274.80 and lvc is 178.62 plus shipping

Part numbers for gen2 DCCV's are different
If you need one check with Max he is the best.
 
I am having this problem also. Pass side blows hot while driver side says cooler. i have a 10 week old baby and she hates to be hot so i need to fix it asap. From all my reading it sounds like the DCCV needs to be changed. Has anyone found a good write up on how do do this with Pics maybe a shop manual or something. Also how can you do the DATC test on a 2001 LS?

mines still good, 2001, 110k. do you think the more time you use it and at what fan speed you use it at determines how fast it could go out? i rarley go past the second notch on mine but usually i keep it on the first and almost always in auto mode.
 
I may have to order a new DCCV as well :mad: :mad: . I bought the freon to charge my system and the gauge said it had enough coolant. I checked fuses all were OK. So now I did some research and this seems to be a typical issue.


Now My question is do I need to purchase any other part?
