dash lights wont stay on

i own a 91 mark vii se that my dad gave to about six months ago. i love the car, there are really no problems with the car except that my dash lights wont come on when i turn my headlights on. Ive tryed just about everything that i could think of from changing the dimmer switches to regrounding the cluster. and the worst part is they come on when i open the door to get into the car but turn off as soon as i turn the key on. Can anyone help?

Lighting Continuity On The Inside

The answer is a bit involved.

Our interior light systems are always hot, yet can have the ground side broken in more than one place.

Based on what you've typed, you should first BENCH TEST your light switch (closest to the steering column). You have to verify resistance and continuity.
