My heater fan blows fine and gets very hot. Sometimes it just starts blowing cool. I'd expect this in auto mode but just on a set temp it should stay consistant right? It usually blows cool for a short while then blows hot again. Nothing consistant enough to give specific times. I don't know of any components that only work sometimes like this, I'm stumped. Ideas?

If I am not mistaken, it does not matter which button you have pushed the air temp output will always try to stabilize at the set temprature. I believe the difference is when you have it set on automatic the blower speed.

Your EATC unit works like your thermostat in your house. I keep mine set at about 78. When I get in the car in the morning, and the temp is very cold outside, the heat comes on. In the spring/summer, the ac comes on.

78... damn... up here in michigan, we start to sweat at 65!!! j/k... I keep my LS at 68 though

that's because mines aren't supposed to blow hot air... they just simply blow up...

The engine runs very cool and super consistant(hope thats not broke)Right when the car is started it warms up pretty quick. After a while it just starts blowing cool. Later, warm again. If I turn up the heat it does go up. I like it around 68, I've switched to mid 70's. Still varies. Fan works good. If something was really broke I don't think I'd ever get any heat. Still confused.

I bet you the arm for the blend door is broken. Here is what you do to check this. It should take you 10 min. to do prob take more time to read this.
1. pull off the head light knob
2.pull off the trim piece that covers the light switches pulls straight off there are 4 tabs be sure to pull off light attached to backside of trim piece.
3.next is to pull off the trim piece that has 2 vents message center screen cover and speedo surround it is all one piece.unscrew the two philips screws from the top inside of speedo surround.unscrew 2 9/32 screws around light switches.now unscrew 3 philips screws holding light switch on also also push in the two tabs to release the dome light switch.now its time to pull it off just have paitents. There are 8 tabs that hold the panel in one on each corner of the vents on the back side. pull off from left to right. start pulling the panel off from the right inside of speedo surround.
4.now it's time to take off the keypad/radio. this best way to do this without breaking off any tabs is to first take out the radio.get a pair of double din radio keys $4.00 from kragen or most auto parts stores.slide the keys in the 4 holes of the radio until you feel the first click. now push the keys outward sideways from the radio and pull the radio out. disconnect the wire connectors.
5.to take keypad out. there are to tabs on front side of keypad located under economy and date time buttons.push tabs toward front of car and lift up slightly. now from th top pull up keypad from sides there are two tabs on right and one ont the left.disconnect wire connector and 2 7/32 screws that hold temp sensor attached to white hose do not touch sensor.
6. now you will take out message center. there are 4 9/32 black screws take these out be careful not to drop any of these screws. disconnect the wire connectors.
7. look to the right side of the opening of message center and look for the 1/2" white plastic insert with a square slot. on the backside of this shaft is the blend door arm check to see if it is broken. check this first it could also be your temp control module.if you need any more help let me know. hope this helps -Pat

here is what it looks like. you should not be able to see any white from the shaft.if you are not able to tell turn your car on and move your temp from max ac or 60 to 90 and see if the white shaft is turning but the arm is not. in the pics you can see that the arm is broken the square slot of the arm splits so the shaft turns and the arm only sometimes turns if it catches.-Pat

I was messin around with the heater in the car on my commute home and have a new clue. Only my defroster fan works?! I pressed the other buttons and no blow! Only the defroster. Does this mean I have 2 problems or does the blend door control heat and fan routing? The eng temp neeedle always rests just between the a and the l in normal on the temp gauge. The coolant level is good. Newt, incredible directions:D I'll be trying that soon. Thanks again.

hey speed demon the blend door only changes the temp. the door that changes between defrost, floor, vent ect. is operated by vacuum.there are 2 vacuum connections one on the back of the temp control module and one behind the glove box door and of course the 3rd one is attached to the door that is being opperated.the first connection to check would be the one behind the glove box.to open up the glove box there is a cord attached to the right side dissconnect this then there are 2 cutouts in the glove box push these inward this allows the door to open more than normal.the connector is in the center it has 1/8 colored tubes make sure this is a good connection. one end of the connection is a green silicone fitting you can put a mighty-vac on this with a tapered rubber fitting and put a little vacuum on each colored tube make sure that you can hear the doors opening and closing by putting vacuum then releasing it. if the connection looked good, all doors open and close and they hold vacumme the next thing to do would be to take a look at the connection behind the temp module make sure you reconnect the fitting behind the glove box.here are the steps to get to the temp control module.
1.you need to pull off the defrost panel.it has three tabs holding it in. remove connector.
2.remove wood grain surround.this is usually takes some effort to pull this out .there are 2 9/32 behind where the defrost panel was take these out.there are 4 heavy duty tabs 2 on the bottom 2 on the top. the two on the bottom are on the left and right sides pretty much center of the oval shifter opening.the top right is 1.5 " down from top and the top left is 3" down from the top.there is a ground wire on bottom right pull this off.
3.turn key to acc position so you can put shift lever in 1st gear then turn key off.
4.to take the module out take out the 4 philips screws then pull module out of opening.disconnect the 2 wire connectors on the left side.now to take off the green silicone fitting there are 2 3/8" nusts holding it on.be very careful especially when putting nuts back on if you cross thread the studs or break one off then you will really have problems.
5.once again do the vacuum test to find where the problem is. if i remember correctly the line you want is blue but test them all there's only 4. red black white and blue. good luck. and remember to check the blend door arm to see if it is broken or even if it only has a small crack because it sounds like you have 2 problems. I usually put a tiny bit of silicone grease the light stuff to help seal a little better plus the fittings are a little snug so it helps to slide the fittings on. hope this helps -Pat

wasn't until now that I realized you have a gen 1. so pulling off the wood surround may be different prob the same process though
