Cougar driveshaft?

As long as it was a V8 cougar, then yes it will fit. However it is a steel 2-piece driveshaft, and would be a major downgrade from stock. Find yourself a 93 MarkVIII shaft, which is an aluminum one-piece unit.

The 93 Mark Viii Drive shafts are not really all that hard to come by either..
I have a junk yard up the road who has 2 93's with driveshafts still in them.

It's actually a Dynotech 4" aluminum out of a cougar... but it's from a 3.8 stroked to 4.3L v6... :(

The 93 shaft is plenty strong, i've gone 12's in mine with stock u joints. I just had it balanced and put it in! ;)

I'm not doubting a 4" dynotech is stronger but i dont think it is needed for anything we put at it. We are so limited on tire size, i think traction is the weak point on mark viii's

You are going to break an axle shaft long before a drive shaft I reckon....

very true. and when you have those kind of problems, watch out! You are a badass, that is unless your mark viii has 500,000 miles and torn axle boots . lol:D

Or a manual trans!

As for the advantages of the 4" driveshaft, it isn't so much for strength as it is for critical rotational speed. If you run really steep rear end gears, like 4.30s or higher, and/or if you typically cruise at high speeds, then the stock MarkVIII shaft could still give you some vibration problems. With the larger diameter shaft, it won't start vibrating until much higher speeds.

Are those aftermarket shafts lighter? (the obsolete MMX and the regular aluminum) If so, that would also help.

Well in the 1/4 it won't be there long...

I'm also trying to decide on whether or not to do the forced lube mod.
