The coolant tube assembly (basic P/N 9N499) is leaking on my 03 LS 3.9. I am going to order a replacment, and need to know if the upper intake manifold needs to be removed in order to get to the fasteners, or can it be removed with the upper intake manifold left in place. Looking at it prior to disassembly, I can see it going either way. If I need an upper intake manifold gasket set, I want to order it at the same time as the coolant tube assembly.

I already replaced the other plastic components on the front of the engine about a year ago, and foolishly didn't replace the coolant tube assembly at the same time. So, I'm hoping that with this part replaced, I'm good to go for a few more years.

Thanks!

its been done with out removing the mani, the rear bolts are too long and need to be cut to make it happen. i remember seeing a thread with pictures when i replaced a bunch of those parts.

If you are talking about the piece under the throtle body, no you don't have to.

Edit: i don't even remember removing the throttle body, cause i got it all done within an hour and half.

The part I'm talking about isn't the one that connects to both heads, and has the hoses running from it. It's the angled tube behind that part that runs partially under the front of the upper intake manifold.

I don't mind removing the intake to do the job, but just want to make sure and order the gasket set if I need it.

Thanks,

JD

You can do it without removing the manifold, but you will have to pry against the manifold or cut the back bolts (and replace them with shorter or cut down bolts) that hold the 9N499 down.

If you decide to remove the manifold anyway, I recommend that you also order the throttle body heater hose that runs from the throttle body to somewhere under the manifold and replace that while you can.

Thanks for the response. I'm guessing you back the bolts out as far as possible, then cut them off with a die grinder, etc. Then pull the pipe and remove the stubs. How much shorter bolts are required? Is there still plenty of thread engagement?

Also, when you say "pry against the manifold", is this instead of cutting the bolts, or something that is required just to gain access? I really hate to pry too hard against the upper manifold, as I suspect they're expensive/hard to find if I break it.

Thanks for the tip on the T/B heater hose. I'll definately get one of those if I decide to pull the intake. Sorry for all the questions, but I like to have everything I need before starting a project, and also keep the surprises to a minimum!
