ok, so every now and then my car will overheat - like almost pegged to the top of the temp gauge, i'll get my messages (check engine temp and the occassional engine power reduced) while its way up there i'll baby the engine of course, no accelerating hard or at all i f possible, turn the heat all the way on (real fun in the summer) it'll do it only for 2 or 3 minutes then it'll suddenly drop all the way back to normal. so maybe its a bubble in the system, maybe its a stuck thermostat, maybe its a screwy temperature reading thingy... but here's where it gets weird my coolant resevoir will slowly begin to look lower and lower and when it gets really low then it begins to overheat more often (naturally) so i've had to somewhat regularly add coolant but i have not seen any evidence of any coolant leaks anywhere in the engine at all since i've owned the car with ONE exception. Since the resevoir was low a few days ago I added coolant to it... the car was warmed up, i know you're not supposed to add it then, but i did. and i accidently added too much. Again, doesn't really bother me except then I took it out, came back and parked, and when i came out a few hours later to move it and there was a huge puddle of coolant under it. i checked the resevoir and it had kinda leveled to where it should be on the fill lines (dunno if it has some kinda of overflow function where extra coolant is dumped... sounds kinda weird to me) and the car has been running wonderfully ever since... no overheats or nothin.... but should the intermittent overheat return any idea whats causing all this?

An overfill will dump as you describe. You may have got rid of your bubble and now are good to go. Keep us informed.

same issue happened today! started to drive it, the heat got about 3/4 to max so i kicked on the heat on full then it gradually dropped back to normal operating temp, i turned off the heat and it stayed fine for the rest of the trip. thinkin its a sticky thermostat? yes/no? odds are i'll do it because its a $10 part...

Have the cooling system pressure tested. That will pinpoint any possible leaks right away. If no leaks, probably looking at a thermostat swap.

think i'll do the therm swap first cuz it'll be cheaper than the pressure test -- it's not too tough right? i've done a bunch of thermostat replacements but never on an LS.. is it easy on the v8? searching around it seems like others have had the same issue. surprised i didn't catch more flak the not using the search button law ;)

Same thing happens on mine but,,,,,,,

mine did the same thing, turned out to be the fan motor gone bad. I put in water wetter and it really helped. I still over heat, but never spike it. This car does not like ambient temps over 100F. I get those here in Georgia, sitting still in traffic on hot pavement with no air circulation and it goes hot. I simple turn off the A/C, crank up the heat and the temp goes back to normal. I live with it. Only a few times a year here in GA it gets that hot. Good luck.:)

yep - could be a t-stat going out.

easy swap - three bolts in the housing - where the lower rad hose comes into the cooling tree.
