cold engine question

I know that you shouldn't romp on any cold engine, however when she's cold and you get more than 1/2 way into the throttle the engine surges. Almost like a rev limiter. It just started doing this about a week ago. No CEL. Once she warms up its gone. Any ideas?

I get the same thing in my '93. Usually somewhere around 3-4k RPM. What's up with that?
 
Wow, glad I brought this subject up. It's not only mine. I sure would like to figure it out!
 
Well the IMRCs open at 3k given a boost.... could that be it? All Marks had these, all years.
 
My '95 does the exact same thing. It's obviously a common problem!

I try to avoid getting on it too much when the engine is cold, but when I do, it bucks and misses. When the engine is semi-warm (around the time when the heater first turns on) it doesn't miss, but it loses a lot of power past 3k rpm or so. Once it's warmed up, it's absolutely perfect.

My guess is that my old plugs/wires are worn down and they have a hard time dealing with the rich fuel mixture that the engine uses when it's cold. I'm going to do a tuneup as soon as the weather warms up a little. Hopefully that fixes it!
 
i almost never "get on it" when cold,but i dont think my 95 (with 93 engine/computer) has any problems.
i'll try to pay attention to it next time i take it for a spin.
i am sure i must have ripped it a little when cold in the past and these symptoms dont sound familiar.
 
Side note: If you using FULL synthetic (not a blend) its less of a big deal as full synthetics can handle very cold temps fine and dont thicken up nearly as much as dino oils.

Mine has a fresh tune up just around 4 months ago. new wires and plugs. Is this only a 95 issue? It starts great and idles great, but when theres a load on her while she's cold then forget about it. Just like everyone eles has stated once she's warmed up no more problem.

Mine's a '93. I tend to be a bit lead-footed in the mornings, since I'm usually running late to work. If I go WOT right out of the driveway (or try to rev it in the driveway), it'll usually stop me from getting higher than 3k RPM. But, getting onto the main road (one mile and one stop light later - barely 5 minutes, if even that) it's good to go. Then again this is Florida, so my definition of "warm up time" is probably much shorter than some of y'allz's.

I used to also have a problem with it trying to stall out right after I slam the pedal down, if it was cold. That stopped when I cleaned the MAF sensor though. Could this still be related?

yeah,i noticed last week it was 4 degrees and my car spun over like it was 80 degrees,i love synthetic
 
My 93 does the same thing. You take off stone cold and it does the waa waa waa till you let off. One mile down the road and its gone.All the tuneup stuff is brand new and car runs 100%. I thought it might be a warm up safe guard in the EEC. It would be easy for Ford to put that in. I live in New England too.
 
Yeah I paid more attention to mine today, it wont go past 3k and like right on the mark said, waaa waaa waaa. 1 mile later and it's gone. I just wonder if it's a problem that should be fixed since some of our cars do it and others dont??? Maybe it is a safegaurd???
 
Ill have to check that out tonight when I get in my 94. I have a remote start so I never noticed it before I guess.
 
Add me to the list with this problem. Mine started doing it in Sept and has progressively gotten worse up until today. I replaced plugs and wires back in June. I think its probably a coil pack or maybe even my EGR valve... Or IAC I am gonna replace all 3 things shortly.

Also about the same time my tach started to act funny when this missing start and now the reading is off about 30% of where it should be. I just figured my car was turning into a huge piece of crap since everything got wierd at one time.
