has anyone mad there own cold air for the LS. if show how and any links to sound clips or steps on what they ran in to!

I've built a few for my 01.... but mine are a bit more advanced than the average PVC jobs. Welding, bending, grindind, that sort of stuff. Also had to do some minor hose fab to get rid of the crap hoses on the stock intake. I have a teaser photo on my 6spd TT Nitro LS thread.

here is my newest one after most of the welding was done. She's been ground down and had a few nipples added in since:

I just built a mass air flow adapter, going to weld it to a 3 inch 90 degree and put the filter in to the bumper/fender...if you use just what you have there it is a short ram hot air... should have pics up tonight.. if i can get a hold of my buddy to use his welder!

did it make yours any loader on the intake side... going from stock box to cone?

i dont know.... I had a nitrous backfire make some nice loud boom type destruction! LOL She sounds like a nitro funny car right now!

and there is more to mine..... jsut not in the picture. That picture doesnt even have the nipples or bungs for the rest of the tubing. If your using a 3" pipe to go into the fender, be ready either fro vibration noise or to modify the area you want to go through

I'm looking to get a intake made or find one cheap for the LS. Paying that price for it seems senseless. I seen true CAI's that are way more elaborate than this ugly thing for way less for other vehicles.

It does how ever make sense to sell it at that price if people are willing to pay seeing on how its the only one made when it comes to the first generation LS. After I added my K&N adapter and K&N conical filter that alone made a difference in sound. I don't know anybody else personally with a LS let alone someone with one that has the full on kit but I can only imagine what it sounds like.

Go there and pick out stuff to make your own. I started making one that put the filter into the fenderwell, but my car sits too low and the filter is basically on the ground. Haven't gotten around to finishing it, but you'll want 3.5" OD pipe if you get anything through there.

mine ugly? or the ones for sale? Mine is a very rough crude first started putting things together picture

I thought the intake plumbing measured out to 3".

Don't take offense I was not speaking of yours. The LS just has the longest most simple design. To me its just a ugly intake in general for the 1st Gen.

I understand yours is a rough draft:lol:

ps: I'm laughing about the misunderstanding not trying to be smart.

does....the throttle boddies of both 1st and 2nd gen are 3"od. He may know something about their sizing though

I'm using 3 inch.... I already cut the hole bigger for the pipe to go in the fender well/ bumper.. its going to point down at the ground.. I will just need to make a bracket to go to the original intake box mount.. the filter close to the ground wont hurt, thats were the cold air is.... unless your lincoln can swim it wont be a problem...

wasn't saying anything bad about your nitro LS.. was just saying a filter in the engine compartment is a hot air intake!

Your LS is probably bad ass

oh and by the way.. my intake has cost 20 bucks mins filter...

Here's what I ordered and it fit with no problems..

C40B-350X3 Silicone Sleeve 3.5" ID X 3" Long - Gloss Black
434-446PE Aluminized Steel Elbow 4" OD X 90 Degree Short Radius - One Longer Leg
AL35X4 Aluminum Intake Tubing 3.5" OD X 4" Long
64060 Stainless Worm-Gear Clamp for 3.5" ID Hoses

Yes, that says 4" OD tubing. I clicked the wrong thing and didn't realize it at the time. I have pictures of it up on here somewhere..

I know you werent man.... I just thought someone else....I think it was werner was saying mine is ugly.... I agree that pic looks like bum. I cut the black part out of a previous version and added some fresh pipe. Trust me it doesnt look like that anymore.

20 bucks huh.... not bad! I think I'm into for around 30, but I have made 3 or 4 now with that 30. Gotta love having your own bender, mig welder, and grinder!

Here's some pictures I took while test fitting it all. There is a bracket underneath where the hole for the tubing goes. That and the wheel well liner got in the way, so that bracket needs to be trimmed or needs to go completely. In my case, I need to order like a 45 degree elbow to turn it towards the corner of the bumper cover.

One day I'll get around to finishing it.

NHLS I was not speaking of yours at all. Please read post #9!

they must have changed the engine compartments on the 03 and newer... mine is just a 90degree pipe.. I will take pics for sure. mine looks nothing like that!

I should also say that i'm not replacing the stock intake tube... just relocating the filter... that is for another day!

Hey, I need pictures!!! How do you expect me order anything eat if the menu has no pictures???

Werner I know you werent I saw 9, I was just clerifying for 00. I agree its long and plain, but with the fitment adjustments I made, it kind of takes away from that long shoot to the front. More curvey if you will.

speaking of pics.... I'm looking at that pic I posted.... damn i dont even remember it looking like that! Thats the best bart of custom fabrication.... you get to see your hard work pay off!

NHLS, I'm taking you have the Xcal to begin with but wouldn't changing the design of the intake even slightly require a re-tune for,... something ( I forget exactly what )?

technically yes. Every time you change anything you can retune to optimise your AFRs. But the gain from a cold air intake is less than most people think. My using less tight bends will free some air flow, but with an already killer tune, it should stay pretty close to dead on. I have new fuel injectors and a new fuel pump, as well as a MAF that I'll be ordering up shortly. The car wont be able to handle the new MAF or injectors so I will NEED to get her tuned at that point. But to answer your question more directly... My car with new CAI and tune I have will be closer to optimal tuning than any stock LS so no it wont NEED a tune.

OK let me ask this. I don't have a tune so when I get my intake made must it be 100% precise or can I have some slight modifications to it?

you can have modifications to it. The LS is a smart friggin car. It will learn different aspects of the fuel/air delivery. For example, it will relearn how to use a fuel pump if you upgrade yours. No tunning is needed. Most cars (i say most because I dont want to say all and have someone know of the ONE i've never heard of) with EFI can take a CAI with no issues. and if you look around there are some wierd intakes out there! Mine has no sharp bends moved the MAF a couple inches, and sucks from outside of the engine bay. She'll run with no problems! If you have more questions hit me up on AIM, or you can call/text me 251 295 0657
