Okay so I went to another mechanic for a second opinion. First one told me I needed to replace the whole engine. The other tells me I need to replace four coils. I asked if he was sure that was the problem. My 00' LS was running rough and had a slight knock. I opted to get the coils replaced, received the call and was told the computer is fried because the coils are not responding. This sounds like horse crap to me but I want to know if this is actually possible? Also this mechanic told me I had to take the car to the dealer to purchase and install because it needed to be flashed. Anyone know why? and is it possible to get away with not going to the stealership?

Before I do that I would by a set of 8 coils and pop them in there yourself. It's not to exspensive, and if it's a 00 LS, chances are it has something to do with that. Then take it in and see what they say. Yea, the computer diognosis sounds like bull, but who knows.

I second northstar's advice, is your check engine light staying on? You can go to autozone for and they can get you some simple diagnosis of your vehicle for free. It'll even tell you which coils are bad on which cylinder, you may have more than one coil bad if you car is running that bad. Just after two weeks of having my car one of my coils went out and it ran rough and knocked a little bit. I went over to autozone and that told me my coil was bad. I just bought one and threw it in there. It is really not that hard just will require some patients, there is plenty of good information on the board. I found all the info here and i did it myself and my car runs really smooth now. Can you still start up and drive this car a little bit. I hope that is all that is wrong with your LS, mine is a 2000 and this appears to be a common problem among the 1st gen LS. Also one more tip clean all the connections really good with some dialect grease.

Coils

Four coils were replaced. The problem did not go away but he insisted that my computer was fried and it needed to be replaced and flashed, once that is done he assured me my car would run like new. Four coils plus diagnostic, total was $706.00. Did I get ripped off or what?

So is your car still in this guy's shop? If you are still driving try going to autozone and see what their diagnostics tells you. And if your ecu is going out try this cheap route first, well its what i'd atleast do first. I found some ecu's that are for sell on ebay for a really good price. I'll send you a pm of the link. This is a really great price so you can afford this and just by this ecu and install it yourself. Im sure it won't be too difficult to replace the ecu, ive never done it but i'd imagine it'd be bolted down and you'd have to take off some plugs.
