I was looking into getting a code scanner for my 2004 Lincoln LS. What kind of scanner would you suggest I purchase that will read the codes and erase if needed?

an obd2 one preferably.
OBDII won't help you; you need a CAN-compatible scanner to read '03-'06 LS codes. The one that's normally recommended is AutoEnginuity's ScanTool ( http://www.autoenginuity.com/products.html ), but it's a bit on the expensive side, and you have to supply your own laptop or PDA to use it.

I saw a scanner at Wal-Mart that is called the CANOBD (or something like that), which had a very reasonable price (under $100). Unfortunately, aside from having CAN in the product name, I couldn't find any evidence that it will actually read CAN codes.

I am on version 8 now - the only thing I needed to do was get a new license code for my extended Ford pack.

You can read/clear dtc's with an xcal.

I almost bought the autoenginuity scantool from the guy I bought my shop manuals from (eL eS was his username IIRC). I wish I would have.

I was being a smartass, I am plenty aware of scantool software, and yes I love using my new ethos.
