CEL on / missfire

ok guys so i just purchased my long time dream car, 2000 lincoln LS 5 speed about 2 weeks ago. Got it for a steal cause it needed minor work which has been done. Only thing left is the CEL is on and sounds like missfire.

So last week i went ahead and replaced all my plugs with NGK V-power platinum plugs, before this the car was missfiring like crazy, running like crap and was shaking a lot. Once i removed the old plugs, i checked the gap, they were ranging from about 0.050-0.060 which is over spec ( 0.040) So i went ahead and gapped the new plugs to spec, slapped em in and restarted the car and it was much smoother and the CEL went away.....or so i thought. I turned the car off and restarted and sure enough the CEL came back on..

Now after reading some of the topics in this forum + the fact that i had major oil in about half my spark plug chambers, i am deciding to do a complete replacement of the valve cover + spark plugs tube seals as well as replacing all 6 coil packs

My first question to you guys is....which coil packs would you recommened? are the generic ebay brands any good? or should i go with the visteon ones?
 
bwd/intermotor coils at advanced auto.
use code 'a123' and buy each coil seperately to maximize your savings.
also comes with a lifetime warranty, which the visteons do not appear to have. i think theyre cheaper too if you follow directions above with the code and seperare buys.. i dont feel like looking that up tho.
 
those sets of viseton coils were apparently marked wrong from the manufacturer, so i will try your method jrand
 
would anyone recommend getting generic coils? Im replacing all 6 and i cant find the visteons anywhere now...

I would if you had a V8, that way when they go bad again they are very easy to replace, however on a V6, i would go with the good stuff because the passenger side is a real pain in the @ss to change out

ahh damnit i just bought a different set of coils!!!:mad: i would have bought these if i saw them sooner....

but anyways this is the set i found on amazon.....dirt cheap so i bought 2 sets...

they may fail quicker than the visetons but as long as a set gets me thru winter im fine as i have no problem replacing these
 
my 06 just started having coil issues a few days ago. had a diagnostic done. it was the number 8 coil. i figured that at just about turning 80000 that sooner than later i would need to change coils and plugs. sucks that the visteons are hard to find now. i thought about going with the accels but have read mixed things with them plus the issue of changing the wires on the connector is a lil bit of a pain. is motorcraft coils about the only good option left?

If only ... available ... for my ... V8 ... Grrrrrrr


Ps: get what you pay for, good thing you bought 12 of them, you'll be most likely changing them out.

Actually, (like Hite did) the Accel coils would be a good bet and swapping the connectors wires around isn't all that ...
It's the hold downs you'd have to fab or purchase from Hite Performance (fueled by Vodka Redbulls).

Running with no covers could also present a problem, due to moisture or water,
but I'd only worry about that if you planned on going Swamping in water with it.

It's a tight seal from what Hite explains.

They may be on my list of things to try next time.

I've got no cover on my V6 aswell which, along with the oil in the spark plugs, could have been a factor in my bad coils
 
i will update post #1 once i get my gasket kit and coils in and review on how they work
 
visteon= no warranty. the ones from bwd/intermotor have lifetime warranty. order online from advance auto. current code is 'ES123' for 20 off 50 purchase. buy them in seperate transactions to save the most.

but $45 for all 6 on the link above... thats prolly your best bet. i would take that risk
 
ok im on amazon. when i type in accel 140032-8 there is two separate results with this part number. there is the accel 140032-8 2 super coil kit. the other result is accel 140032-8 super coil kit. so my question is can i purchase the first result or do i need to order the second result? i know the part number is 140032-8 but im not understanding the purpose of the 2.
 
Hite bought Accel's for his V8 but he may have some insight for you on a V6, I do not know myself. just be aware the hold down on them does not line up.
