CD changer/radio questions in my 2004

just picked the car up a few weeks ago. so far love it. have the 6-disc changer. noticed that when playing a CD, after several minutes, a noise develops that sounds like a whirring or something spinning. can't hear it while listening to the CD, but even continues for a few seconds after cut the car entirely off. pretty sure it's the CD players as this doesn't happen when listening to the radio or radio is off.

any ideas what the culprit is?

easiest fix to just replace the entire unit and sell mine as is on ebay?

is there a way to attach an AUX input into my current unit? any way to do a USB input?

what about replacing my unit with the navigation/touchscreen unit? what's involved in that? can i use that unit WITHOUT the GPS and just have the touchscreen?

as always, thanks in advance and if any of this has been covered (I've done some searches already) then point me in the right direction.
 
1. Could be the cooling fan in the radio?
2. Probably so.
3. Yes, and yes. PIE aux adapters. I don't know if they still make one for the LS.
4a. Not remotely practical.
4b. Things you need at a minimum to add factory navigation are:
Nav head unit
Nav DVD drive unit
Sub-woofer amp
Four channel amp
Multiple wiring harnesses
GPS antenna

If you want voice control (factory systems have this) add:
Auto dimming mirror with factory microphone (used only on nav equipped cars)

If you want the steering wheel buttons to be labeled and work correctly add:
nav option steering wheel button assembly

If you want the full THX sound add:
THX door speakers (4) and subwoofers (2)


4c. No.

If you want a touch screen, it is easier and (mostly) better to go aftermarket.
 
The CD Changer just went on my 05 and I just put in a Pioneer touchscreen for $300.00. It was super easy, it sounds better than the factory unit and came with bluetooth.

stay the hell away from that radio!!!

first, anything boss makes is complete garbage, the parts they use are piss poor and they break all the time. not only do they break all the time but they preform like sh!t as well, screen looks like garbage, horrible response time for the touch screen, and sound worse than a ten dollar set of computer speakers...




next, this is where I usually warn people looking at good brands with moving faces about how much more likely they are to fail, with a boss radio you'll be lucky if it even works right out of the box. as there is a wally world within minutes of my shop, I get my fair share of their sweet Boss, Jensen, and Dual radios, my last boss was a double din last month in a 1st gen edge. the first one the screen wouldn't fully open without assistance. me being the nice guy I am swapped it out with another one for the price of on the house, this one would not play any disc at all. at that point i told him that i would give him one more exchange for free so time to choose wisely, pick another boss and i put it in and wash my hands of it, or he could spend a bit more and get a quality brand from me that I can actually stand behind... of course he made what I can only assume was another in a very long list of poor life decisions.



and last here is a big clue of which radios should be avoided like a foreign FWD. you want to stay away from any brand that uses "shipping bolts". because if you need to have bolts lock down the optical drive while the unit is shipped in a styrofoam packed box, then there is no way its gonna last long after you remove those bolts and mount it into a dashboard.

Agreed. Even with major brands, there are differences between what you'll find at WalMart and at other retailers. To keep costs down, WalMart pressures manufacturers to use their recommended (i.e. Chinese) manufacturers to supply components. Some companies switch their entire production to the Chinese suppliers, but some may have different products for WalMart.

When I was shopping for a new TV for my mother, I looked at a Sony at both Best Buy and WalMart. Both had the exact same model number, and the one at Best Buy was ~$20 more. Upon closer inspection, the one at WalMart was clearly different, despite having the same model number. All I could see was that the ports on the back were different, but who knows what was different on the inside.
