When doing this procedure, can I just skip all steps and go to step ten, also do I need a scan tool to get it into the learning state. The kam was reset about a month ago. When I replaced the pressure sensor for the egr valve, and I'm experiencing the 4-5-4 drop out like the few post I just read.
I have a 02 lincoln ls. v8.
Thanks in advance.
i am not familiar with 02 or older transmissions. i would recommend getting the shop manuals off ebay for 02. foreigners will send you a cd for a few bucks on ebay.
if its like an 03-06, it might smooth it out or it might not. best i can tell, it depends if all of the parts/sensors/etc factoring into a shift are clean/in spec first off. if that condition is met, the other thing that factors into whether or not step 10 is going to smooth it out is how bad the 4-5-4 actually is. in my experience, if the pcm feels it is close enough to being 'in-spec' as it is then it is much less likely to smooth itself out unless you do step 10 and then occasionally do starts in d-4 and then throw it into d-5... i managed to smooth out 4-5-4 problems this way one time when i didnt have time to do the whole cycle.. it eventually smoothed out over the the course of a month of starting in d4 at a certain traffic light and then throwing it into d5 after like 30 seconds at 45-55mph on cruise control.
at the point when you clear the kam, that is when the car does the bulk of its learning. the first trip out is easily the most important in my experience. sometimes it picks up bad shifting strategies and harsh shifts(without throwing a single code btw) the first time out.. just clear the kam again and all of a sudden the bad symptom is gone like magic <once again, only if EVERYTHING factoring into a shift is clean/new/operating within spec>. the car adapts a TON the first time its out after a kam reset. and it will not behave 100% correctly if you dont follow the procedures correctly, though it will operate and it will not throw a code unless something is
majorly off.
i recommend to clear the kam, follow the procedures while driving like grandma. then drive it how you normally do for a few days after that, keeping the kam from the grandma drive cycle.
THEN
clear the kam again, follow the procedures again while driving it like a madman. then drive it how you normally do for a few days, keeping the kam from the madman drive cycle.
compare the two and be amazed <if everything factoring into a shift is within spec, cant say it enough>.
the shift strategy is very adaptable, you just gotta know how to do it and the only way to learn is to get it running right and tinker with the pcm/kam/shift strategies.
additionally, i dont have sst, someone has reported that if they use sst frequently the car remembers how they liked to shift using the sst and tries to mimic that. i have no clue if that is true or not, dont have sst.
