Car threw its first CEL last night.

Well my 04 just turned over 52k on the clock and last night it threw a CEL. I was driving along at a steady 65 on the highway and it stumbled a little and the light came on. Then today on my way to work it stumbled again, this time while accelerating in town. Didnt seem like a transmission problem but I just dont know. Any ideas?
A week ago I put on a KKM intake. I checked all the connections and the MAF sensor, everything is still in place and tight.

Can a Ford dealer pull codes from my Lincoln and tell me what they mean?

Autozone, Pep Boys, Advance Auto - will all pull the codes for free.

With the codes we can usually get close to the problem

Thanks a bunch man. I called the Ford dealer and they wanted $40 to read the codes. I am pretty sure the Lincoln dealer charges $60.

I will stop by Autozone and get the codes on my lunch break. Then look up the problem.

Good luck w/autozone. It'll be hit or miss whether they can read your codes or not. your 04 is can bus. all but one of the local shops can NOT read codes for me since they have old equipment....
 
Well AutoZone was able to read the code. Here is what they gave me:

P0351
The PCM has determined that a malfunction exists in the primary or secondary electrical circuits for ignition coil 'A'

Does this mean that the coil is bad or there is a short in the wire leading to it?

Which is coil 'A' ? I thought they were numbered by cylinder 1, 2, 3...

any help is appreciated.

Are you sure that you're not still in warranty? My 04 has over 62K and a recent problem was fully covered. (I did not buy any extended warranty.)

What was your "recent problem" ?

To the best of my knowledge the factory warranty lasts for 4 years or 50k, whichever comes first.

How would I go about checking without actually having the work done?

It depends on the repair; if it's one of a few items, it falls under the 8-year/80,000 mile Federal emissions warranty. If it was a pre-existing problem (ie, one that was documented as having started before the warranty expired), Ford/Lincoln will often cover it, but I don't know how long after the warranty expires they will do so (and I certainly don't think that they are required to do so).

In general, though, when the factory warranty expires (4yrs/50K miles on the LS), they no longer cover repairs.

This problem is uncommon on 2nd Gen LSes, but gaskets can fail on any car. IIRC, beaups(?) had it happen on his '03.

If you're not the original owner, it could have been a previously diagnosed problem. If the previous owner complained about it at a FLM dealership, it would have been recorded in OASIS, and your dealer's service department (and Lincoln) would thus have known about it.

If you're the original owner of the car, you probably got an AWA (after warranty adjustment), which is, as I understand it, a courtesy sometimes offered to Lincoln buyers by the dealership (and is entirely at the dealer's discretion).
 
early 03's had the problem. my 03 v8 had it. if you have light grey gaskets you are at risk.....
 
my car threw a CEL sorta, was taking a simple turn and the check advantrac light came on, stopped and turned the car off then back on, cleared, then turned advantrac on and off and works fine
 
Does anyone have a schematic showing the location/naming of the coils? I still have no idea which is "coil A."
I know half of the coils are a real PITA to get to being under the intake manifold, so I would rather not have to replace all the coils unless absolutely necessary. Also, is there any way to bench test the coils (off the car)?


Any help on "Coil A" would be appreciated.

Wish I could help you out on the "Coil A" reference.

Might want to try giving your dealership a call and ask which one it is, and get an estimate. If they give a rather high estimate say "geez that's a lot of labor...I thought Coil A was one of the cylinders closest to the front of the car..closest to the bumper, so labor would be easy. Sounds like it's not? Which cylinder is it?"

And from there, we can tell you the location of the cylinder
 
I've never heard of it referred to as 'coil a' - nut I do see where all the coils have a letter in the ODBII spec.... weird.

I appreciate that.
I would assume that "coil A" would be mated with cylindar 1, coil B to cylindar 2 and so on. But confirmation of this would be nice.

Also I do not know which is cylindar 1, 2, 3 etc. I am sure someone here has this information for me... I'll look in the Tech section to see if I can find a schematic.
 
Well I still have no information on Coil A. On the good side the CEL went off yesterday when I started the car after work.
I assume this to mean that it was a one time problem and not something that has continued.... granted if the coil is bad it will likely happen again.

If anyone has a schematic of the engine cylindar layout for my 03+ v6 I would greatly appreciate it.
