While driving last night the car suddenly began misfiring pretty severely. I don't have any explanation why.

The IMRCs on the car have been leaking some air, but this hasn't caused any symptom this severe to date. Could the o-ring have failed so suddenly and dramatically and cause this.

Other than that, I'm stumped. I just put the Actron scanner on the car and pulled no codes other the:
538- Insufficient RPM change during Dynamic Response Test
(Engine Run Self-Test).

632- Overdrive Cancel Switch(OCS) –
no switch action detected during Engine Run Self-Test.

I just refilled the gas tank with 93 Premium and added a bottle of anti-freeze in case bad watery gas was the cause. This failed to solve the problem.

Any ideas?

First code is usually a sign of bad IAC. The computer is commanding an rpm change and its not seeing it. Second code is prolly a false reading. Normally when you do a self test, the computer makes you step on the brake, turn the wheel half way, and cycle the ocs switch. If you didn't cycle the switch, it will give you a code.

I would check your plug wires, to make sure none of them are shorted to ground or shorted to each other. These two would cause severe misfire. Also, check your fuel pressure. A lean condition due to a faulty pump will also cause a misfie.

Plugs. under 7k miles.
Wires. under 15k miles.
IACV. under 10k miles.
And the pump was replaced about 20k miles ago as well.

I wanted to jump on this post because I have the same scanner and am trying to figure out how to use this scanner doing a key on engine running test. I am getting the same code 538 when doing on the test but I don't know if I'm doing the test right.

I turn the car on with the tester attatched... I set it to test it raises the rpms a bit. I turn the wheel and hold it a few seconds toich the break and toggle the overdrive cancel switch.

Now i'm supposed to to give it a wot, after a dynamic response (a beep/flash) by the tester. But I don't see it on the tester maybe because I don't see it... When I give it a wot the engine runs really rough. The codes that come back is 538 a code which I thought to mean that I'm not doing the test right. Does it sound like ok doing the the test right? Or am I missing the point when I'm supposed to do the wot.

I would like to know I'm doing the test right because im assuming that 538 means that I didn't do the wot after the dynamic signal right. How far in the Rome do you hace to go to be sufficient for the test?

hey whyd you ask me if my car is burnng oil cuz it is a bit what's that have t do with it? It's not doing it that bad though quart low

Those two codes are meaningless.

they just are saying that you didn't punch the gas at the proper time during the test and that you didn't cycle the OD switch during the test.

Dynamic response test is also called a "goose test" in some manuals

UNLESS you did "punch it" and push the OD button.

Did you go WOT?

It's not a how high you rev the motor, it wants you to go to WOT.
Now it does mention insufficient RPM detected, if you did go WOT and the PCM isn't "seeing" WOT then that's probably alot of your problem

Do not spray that car until your cars PCM can SEE WOT.

could be a TPS issue.. if you DID do the WOT/Goose Test.

Doesnt that scanner have a manual?

The computer is commanding an rpm change and its not seeing it. .

the PCM test was waiting for the tester to "punch the gas" and it didn't happen according to the PCM.

But everything else you said was correct, in regards to turning the wheel, pressing the brake, cycling OD..ect.

Yeah I tried it again it takes a while after you do all the stuff to get the dynamic response. I'm pretty sure the code I got was that it's all good. 1 1 1 -1 1 1. It repaets right. I must have missed the first flash after gunning it because I can't see the scanner while I'm in the drivers seat. I saw 1 1, the a pause then 1-1-1. So assuming it repeats and I misses the first flash, it's all good.

Yes I have the manual.
