Hey guys, I'm taking my car in next week to get tint done and while they are at it, I'm having them lightly smoke my taillights, headlights, and fogs.. I also just recently ordered smoked clear corners for my front bumper.

I'm thinking I want to get rid of the chrome on my grille and license plate surround. Is it possible to have them smoke this chrome? Would i have to worry about it peeling off of the chrome? And lastly, has anyone tried to smoke chrome, or seen it done?

I have an '01 midnight grey ls and I would think anything smoked/tinted on the grey would look very good.. any input you guys can give me is greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

It looks best when the grill and license plate surround are painted the color of the car. You can smoke em if you like but the cleanest look is to have them color matched.

Ask the tinting company if they have ever done it. I've never seen it done.

+1 on the color match like T-money said, but I suppose you're looking for a different look. Nothing wrong with that. I'd like to see how it looks.

You can look into black chrome. Used to have a black 72 Buick Skylark that I always wanted to have all the chrome done with black chrome but never got around to it.

Yes, I'm really looking to try something different here. Seems everyone here @ LVC does the same things to their cars here and there isn't much variety. :shifty: I thought maybe it would compliment everything else being smoked, while being slightly more cost effective. I'll try asking the tint place, when they are open and see if they have done it, or seen it done. Keep the opinions coming please!

Thanks Telco that is something else I may be interested in doing. Is it a similar process like they do regular chrome, only a black chrome? Or a film, or similar?

It is similar but a little different. You could always try nightshade. Or something of the sort. I have never smoked my lights out of fear of someone hitting me but I suppose you could do it to the trim in a light coat.

I would stay away from the stick-on stuff. My roommate used it on some pieces on his car and it was a bitch to put on and even worse to get off.

Similar to chrome just it's black chrome. It's a plating process. I've been curious about black chrome and tinting like your thinking. I have a spare 06 grill. And I want the chrome slats black chrome and the surround is painted black. I'm goin to try putting the film I used to tint my tail lights on the chrome and see if it turns out looking like black chrome.

Actual black chrome is outstanding looking IMO. You want to see a black chrome grill, here ya go.

Yes, Black Chrome is also a paint process. If the shop has never done one before , have them do several proof samples for you. You can decide whether they have the ability to produce the effect or not.

For those who want to do it from home, A**z*n sells the Dupli-Color SHD1000 Shadow Chrome Black-Out kit for under $17. (06/2012) with free shipping.

Black chrome is beautiful if done right. It's more expensive and shops have told me it's harder to do that chrome.
