Can the coils misfire or do they just die?

I'm still messing with the 2000 LS I picked up. Things are looking up as I changed the plugs and the motor fires and runs for a few seconds but then misfires to a stop.......it seems almost as if it is firing a cylinder or two at the wrong time.
I was wondering if it's possible the coils can misfire or if they just die completely

I have a new set of coils to install next.............just waiting on Fedex

The typical coil failure on the V8 LS is an internal high voltage breakdown. The result of this is that the coil still functions, but at a randomly lower voltage. All resistance measurements will still be correct, and you will still get some spark out of it, it just won't be as hot as it should be. This is why the dealers were instructed to stress test the coils.

Short answer - No, they usually don't die completely.

The only way for them to fire (or seem to fire) at the wrong time is if you have a bad timing chain or timing chain guide.

Did you ever do a compression test?

Gonna do the compression test as I do the coils..... I'm not afraid of getting dirty so I will get this car car running and on the road again......too nice a car to part out.......if by chance I really have to dive into this thing, do you guys know of a source to get engine parts such as timing chain set, gasket sets, etc., I've built a bunch of engines already so what's one more.

Hmmmmm, maybe I'll throw in a 5 speed, a stronger rear and a supercharger in it while its in pieces.....Hot Rod Lincoln anyone?:D
