Can Gen 2 gauge cluster go in Gen 1 ?

No, different "language" I think is what they say. Not compatible. There are overlays that will clean up the gauges a little bit. I think silver_ls put in a silver overlay on his, it looks sweet

You can change the faceplates which entails removing and reinstalling the needles.
I'm not sure if the cluster will reset and the needles will be in the right place.
I think someone changed out the cluster lights for blue ones so maybe they can say how they re and re'd the needles to do this.

His are also Gen2. I like the Gen2 font and lines better. Any overlays for Gen1's look exactly like them just different colors and I still want black gauges. I only want them for their classier design.

If this was possible, I would totally put that on my mod list. I agree that the gen 2 gauges are much classier.. could the needles and overlay from a gen 2 be put on a gen 1?

The overlays are made so you don't have to remove the needles.
If you swap out the needles I can't say for sure if they will read correctly.
When you re and re a cluster it sweeps the needles the first time you turn it on then drops back to idle and 0 mph.

I have a gen 2 cluster I swapped in a metric gen 1 faceplate but I never got around to getting it married to the car at a ford dealer.
In a gen 2 the car won't even start if it's not married to the car so I couldn't tell if the guages would read correctly.

I found out that the gen2 needles are just the gen1s with some silver paint on them so painting them wouldn't be an issue. Since the overlay just lays on top of the stock, the gen1s stocker would have to be removed because they would never match up (of course).

Can this be done? Or do you NEED to keep the stock one underneath..?

I don't understand.
A gen2 inlay will fit a gen 1.
It goes over the factory faceplate which you need to keep.
If you want the stock gen2 look you'll have to swap faceplates
The gen2 needles are styled a little bit different.
You can swap the needles but I don't know if the cluster will be correct if you do so.

If you get an inlay it usually comes with it's own lighting and power.
If it's a transparent one lit up by the stock faceplate then yes there will be some loss of illumination.

Were do you find ones like that?

These were what I was comparing..
Gen 1
Gen 2

That's why I said remove the stock overlay. Because of the lighting issue. To be safe, I would want the full light.

I would rather have the ones that have their own power though. If you had a link on those, that would be great. I know Quik has some Gen 1 ones like that and they light up nicely.. :)

Edit: Thanks for assurance and clarifying too..

The paint on the stock faceplate scratches up pretty easy.
You could just expose the faceplate where you need it for the lighting as long as you realize you can't unscratch it later if you fall out of love with your inlay.

I know about LSKs.. They have been sold out for awhile.
The second link is the same site. Just click on LS and then 2003-2006..

Now I feel like a dumba$$.. It says in the description on LSK fits 2000-2006..

If you do some searching there are other inlays for 80.00 or so for the LS but gen 2 style is very rare.

The early style will fit the gen 2 and the cluster will be correct but it will be a gen 1 style.
