I know we had quite a threads on CAI.
Dont want to start another argue2 on what's better and why...
but anyway, I have cone from KKM but thought of cool way to use the stock air box. I took the top part of the stock airbox, which is scoop shape, attached the 3-in opening to 3-in tube. the end of the tube went to the open circle cutout below where stock box used to be. top half of the air box is now sitting behind the bumper next to driver side foglights.
I'll post some pics this weekend to show you what I did.

so basically you moved the airbox from the engine compartment to under it, but behind the front bumper?? I've been wanting to make a heat sheild for my LS, do you think the cone filter could fit into the airbox? Of course the box would be cut and adapted to have a 3" hole at the bottom to run in a tube from the foglights... What you think? Plausible?

I just tried fiddling with my stock airbox and the KKM cone filter to find a way to make it fit and act as a heat shield. I couldn't seem to find a way to make a reasonable fit, definitely looking forward to seeing some examples as well
