Found a pretty cool article in one of my newer Car and Drivers that I somehow missed before. They did a bunch of testing of summer performance tires and since we have been talking about them a bit lately I thought I would post some of their findings. If you want me to post the two pages talking about their methodology also I will, just let me know. Sorry, I dont have a scanner...

Based on this article I think I like the Hankooks the best. They suffer in wet conditions (I mean sh*t look at that tread surface) but I drive cautiously in wet conditions anyway. They seem to own face in the dry and thats what I care about personally
 
These tire articles always seem to favor Michelins. Can't really say i'm surprised. *shrug*

I'll still be getting the Continentals when my current tires finally wear out. Wet traction is a fairly significant thing down here and the price is right.
 
Was going to say, I think a lot, if not all, of their articles are online. Was also going to mention that they sometimes seem to be biased.

Though Continentals did win the real world tests, which of course really is what matters in the long run. Honestly I liked the article because of the chart. It sounds like Michelins are the best all around, but don't seem to do any one thing super well

I got the Cooper RS-3 and they are awsome! They stick well in dry and wet weather and still rated at 540 for it's wear longevity.

Oh yea,, they were about 350 cheaper than the Cont. DWS
 
I used to work in a tire shop and can honestly say michelins are almost always the best tire, but you pay the price for it. I've owned 3 of the tires in that article and my favs are the ones I'm using now, Continental DW, which surprised me as i never cared for continentals until i bought some on a recommendation. (others i owned, Bridgestone Potenzas, which had great traction but gawdawful treadlife, and Goodyear Eagle F1, which continued the trend of goodyears i've owned that literally fell apart from normal driving, never again will i buy goodyears!)
 
Got the Hankooks in March very happy with them. But they take a while to warm up and the ride is pretty ruff. But once they warm up, very smooth and good traction . Wet is not a problem as long as you don't drive like a @$$ hat.

tell me about it, got a real good deal on a set of F1's a little while back, best preforming tire i have ever owned, almost too sticky, took some of the fun out of driving a little be no longer being able to kick the back out just a little when hammering on coming out of a good curve. and then when the road got a little wet they almost felt like they got a little better! however they were also the fastest wearing tire I have ever owned, dont think i got a full 25k miles out of them, definitely had to replace them after about 13 months :(

Got those on now... Been 40000+ miles, no issues and I have a bent rim which is causing one of them to wear significantly quicker making it almost time to replace them. If I didn't have the bent rim I'm 100% sure I'd get another 40,000 out of em as they have at least 50% left. If you keep your rims balanced, tires rotated and aligned you can maintain a tire fairly long.
 
It's a crying shame C+D couldn't do a test on similar rated tires but also ironic that the better wearing tires performed better.

The driver was a former Michelin tire engineer. Not a bad tire, but overpriced for sure. I guess if you have the $...


You won't be disappointed in the conti's. Wet driving is incredible and their driving characteristics fit the LS very well. Not sure the LS, as agile it is for its size, and with non professional drivers, would be able to pick up on the dry performance differences between the front and back of the pack... may as well save some money.

Agreed, I just need a tire that's going to work and last a decent amount of miles. I won't be able to tell the difference with any performance aspect except noise probabaly.

didn't have any balance/alignment problem then. the next set of tires put on after those where taken off lasted easily over 40k before they needed to be replaced.

for the record here, are you talking about the original F1's (now they do make a few different versions)

I doubt that anybody would ever see 80k out of most tires let alone a set of those F1's, they are just too soft, so soft that they dont even have any tread life warranty

I have to agree there. I have the original F1's that came stock on my '02 Camaro. They have about 10500 miles on them and the rears are near the end.
I used to use them on my track car as well but I was only able to get one season out of them. Hoosiers do much better.
 
I am on my second set of Hankooks and i swear by them. I've gone with Bridgestone Potenza's and Michi's and others but the Hankooks are the best tires i have had. Hands down. I do tend to drive like an a$$ sometimes and those things are like glue. Little bit of road noise when cold also possibly from being directional but they have worn great and perform fantastic. Not to mention the price is just as great.
