Buying an LS, need some advice/insight

I've taken turns with my LS going 65-70 on the S curves.. I backed off coming out of the hole because I started to slide.. Maybe it was because of all that power though.. :shifty:

No its because you were a dumbass. lol.

even i know not to go that fast.

I have a 2002 LS V8 that i bought in 2006 with 40000 mi and now have 107000 I bought the extended warranty for 1500.00 4 yr. 40000 mi while under warranty they paid around 6000.00 for repairs ( window reg, front bushings, new transmission, vc gaskets, sway bar links, door lock acculator, wiper motor, and coil.) Even after all that I still love this car just put new tires on and another sway bar link and coils are going to need done. Ride is great and very quiet. Handling and comfort are also great. Wife has a new fusion and LS is quieter and smoother. Was thinking about selling her but I don"t think I can part with her (LS not wife lol)

Well I guess you convinced me, and I guess, as long as I have the extended warranty, I shouldn't have to worry too much about repairs, the warranty goes to the "life" of the engine, which they define as 150k miles, so I guess that gives me about 100k to put on her before I have to worry about fixing things on my own.

I literally cannot wait until tuesday.....I feel like it's christmas when I was younger haha

So, I have been checking out these forums for quite awhile and figured I'd register since I may (hopefully) be a proud new owner of a 2002 Lincoln LS. I test drove the car at the dealer yesterday and I have to say I was blown away by the look and feel of the car. Thing is, I have heard a lot of horror stories all over the net about these Gen 1 LS's and I guess I wanted to get some feedback from the community here to help me with my decision.

First off, the car. It's a black 2002 V8 LS with 58000 miles on it, the interior is immaculate, it looks like it just rolled out of the plant, and it drives pretty well, was a little bit of vibration in the steering wheel I noticed when driving, could have been attributed to the tires not being rotated, or to the crap roads I was driving on. Other than that it seemed okay, did not notice and slippage in the transmission, although truth be told I wasn't paying attention that much because I was gawking at the car itself. One thing for concern though was I did pull over just to check out the car away from the eyes of the dealership, and noticed a burning rubber like smell, and popped the hood and there was a small bit of smoke coming from near the brake fluid (I think) container area when the car was revved. Location was upper right side of the engine bay if that helps. I told the dealer about it and he said that it would be looked at and definitely fixed if there was anything wrong before I bought it. Also, it has a 60 day limited warranty and I would be buying an extended warranty that covers the engine.

I guess what I want to know is, does anything that I have mentioned just pop out as a big problem I will be walking into, and also are these cars as big of a headache as everyone says. Like I said, I am entranced by the damn car, but I don't want to blow all the money I saved if it's just going to be literally one repair after another. Insight please? Horror Stories of your own, or good stories? Oh yeah they want 8900 for the car if that's any help, had 2 owners, and regular service and a clean carfax.

First and foremost, welcome aboard!

Secondly, they are asking waaaaaay too much. I would just slap another 3-4 grand on top of the $8900 and get yourself a 06 with half the miles.

Well, I guess I won't get discouraged by the negative. I mean I figured they can't all be as bad as people say and I am willing to stick with it as long as something like the engine doesn't explode I can work through most things that might go wrong.

You gotta realize though, ALOT of the people who are on this forum, only found it BECAUSE of "googling" some problems they were having; hence the reason for vehicle forums ALWAYS having TONS of threads about stuff not working, etc.

Ive seen quite a few vehicle forums, and never-not saw a post about something being broke or someone needing help.

As for the price, I would be willing to travel many states to save 2-3000$ :D

MAKE SURE you get an extended warranty!

So, went back to the dealer today, talked to him. Got him to agree to 7k with tax included, also he is putting all new tires, and is doing the vc gaskets and coils for me. Not bad deal I guess is it? Couldn't get him to go any lower, haven't finalized anything yet but I have him jumping through hoops for me so that's good at least. What do you think?

Sounds better especially with the new tires.

Tires alone are around $500 for this vehicle if you get the cheapest ones.

Make sure spark plugs are done as well. Also listen closely to the serpentine belt...if its making a slight noise replace it along with the tensioner.

I would then do a coolant flush and oil change so you know where everything stands.

I think that is still a bit steep for a 2002. You can snag a 2nd Gen for about the same price and almost as good of mileage.

It seems to me that you've done a great job of negotiating a fair price though it's hard to judge without more information or pictures. What's really intriguing is the low mileage. That's a big plus for me.
Is this a Ford/Lincoln dealer you are dealing with or a wholesale lot? Are they doing the work you mentioned on site? Make damn sure that work is done correctly before cutting a check! You haven't mentioned whether or not you have had the car checked and scanned by an independent mechanic and that is something I would highly recommend. If you do decide to purchase that warranty, make sure it's from a well known outfit. There's a lot of bogus warranty companies out there. And that 60 day "limited" warranty probably isn't worth the paper it's written on.
You can't just judge by KBB. If you've been shopping for a while for a car as I was, you know what 7K will buy and you also know that you can't touch anything else in this class for that kind of money.
Best of luck!
