Bumpstops....

Ok will this work? I've done some searching on here and didn't find anything that helped answer my question. Is it possible to take the bump stops out of the bags and when they are put back together it still be air tight and not leak. I'm wanting to do it to my Mark,I have some time coming up where the car can be down and out for a lil while. So any info would be great!
 
Maybe if they are new bags. I would not try it with old ones, if its even possible.

Why would you want them out? They are pretty much at the limit anyway, any lower and your upper control arm will impact the fender support. Also the tie rod ends may bind big time. If you do find a way, make sure your entire front end is new.
 
Yeah i thought about things binding and bending and things rubbing. But if I did it it would only be for show. When i pull in some where i'd drop it all the way,then lift it back and and roll out.
I emailed the guy with the ASHAM8 and i should be able to order it wfter Christmas,that is if he has them still. And i plan on buying control arms and sway bar ends soon also,so im going to be spending some money after Christmas...not to mention before also,but after will be MY TURN!!! :D
 
The guy said he'd be doing it for show. funny how nobody comprehends what they read. He probably wants to do it because when you're layed out, (or bottomed out, rather, on these cars, the rear sits lower than the front, and looks half stupid.

Before I played with my front end, after I lowered the car quite a bit I wanted to do this so I didn't bottom out when hitting bumps. I don't bottom out anymore, but that extra half inch would make a huge difference if you cruise fast and low with a low profile tire on a 16" wheel.

I talked to eddie at american air about doing this, he said he's done it for a couple guys, such as Ray? Not sure if he did it for Ray, but I'm pretty sure he said he's done this also. -Eddie says he won't do it anymore, couple reasons would be warranty, second would be because the newer second gen struts (which are about all you can get nowdays) have plastic internal components whereas the gen 1's were steel. So, if you do have the bump stops taken out, you'd only want to for show. I remember someone else (Ray?) or another guy, can't remember his name off hand - who said he took the bump stops out of gen 2 struts, and within 2k miles they bound up, and were absolute junk, and had to be replaced in order to drive the car again.

So, yeah .. it's possible, it's been done. But, don't cruise like that unless you're feeling rich and don't mind down time.

Keep in mind it's possible to elongate the bottom mounting hole on the strut to get a bit lower, don't elongate it too far though, and don't drill a seperate hold altogether unless you're absolutely sure you have it measured out right.

Damn!!!! I think I am just gonna take the bags out! :D j/k

But I am gonna say again, bottoming out is one thing. I dont think I ever have, but I have hit road debris. THAT is the hazard of lowering.

I listened to the wise [men] and didn't take my bump stops out, and haven't got around to finding an alternative yet. But I'm guessing when you bottom an internal plastic strut out, the guts probably break/come apart, and it'll no longer stretch or rebound in a consistent manner.. and maybe not at all.

Always love those pics Ray! Those pics made me decide to buy my second mark.
 
ray that car looks great! just wondering how many miles do ya have on those bags with the bumpstops out? and thats a factory setup? (bags struts) it looks awesome!!
 
I no longer own that car, but it was totally factory as far as the struts (except the bumpstops and the bigger valves for the fast bag system).

If you are going to change to anything other factory get Slam Specialties they have an internal bumpstop.

Dont waste money or time, moding the stock struts, its easier and less time consuming, to made the backets that bolt in to the factory location, with 6" round bags.

you will be much happier with the end result I promise.
