Tried searching and couldn't find anything so here goes.

I broke a wheel stud on my passenger side rear. Can I replace just the stud or do I need to replace the whole hub?

I would pull the wheel off and look for my self but it's pretty cold out so I figured I ask here and save my fingers from the pain.

I know by personal experience that the wheel studs are replaceable, no need to change the hub.

A shop can do it. They do it all the time.

yes - they just pound out - from the front. you have to spin the rotor to the right position to give the broken stud enough clearance to come out. I believe the rears - the stud comes out through an opening in the top spindle mount - meaning the stud you are removing should be in the 12 o'clock position.

Thanks guys.

Anyone know a good place to buy a new stud? Will Autozone or Advance have them?

A shop can usually pound them out and replace it pretty cheap.

I already have been waiting to pick my car up and made note to them not even charging customers for the stud if they were in getting other servicing. And the most recent was when my wife dropped our SUV off at SEARS!

+1

It takes more time to jack up the car and take the wheel off.

i broke mine and was told by autozone that it was dealer only

I believe I have either broke 18 of 20 or all 20 now....

when you buy them - buy a few....

Jeez Quik, how tight are you putting the lugs on?! They're only supposed to be 100 ft lbs! :p

You can order the studs for 2.59 each on Partsamerica.com, but to get them locally I think you'd have to go to a dealer.

Any ideas ???

I took my car to get the tires rotated and the dumbf*cks snapped a rear wheel stud off.
Went to O'Reillys and picked up a few but I cant get the broken stud out. For one, its hitting the spindle Im assuming on the back, not letting it just pop out. And secondly, putting the broken stud at the 12 o'clock position doesnt seem to help; it seems to get best clearance at about 7 o'clock.
Am I doing something wrong? Can anyone help please  ?

sorry to bump an old thread, but i snapped a stud, and am going to replace another half stripped one, these are on the rear passenger, i managed to get the broken one out, it was in the right spot, but to spin the hub to get the other one where it needs to be stopped, do i turn the car on, put it in drive, then quickly put it back in park to turn the hub to a new position? i have changed studs on FWD cars, and i would put it in drive for a second to spin the hub then put it back in park and the studs will have rotated, takes a few tries, but is this the correct way to rotate the hub? thanx

The easy way to do it is to turn it by hand. Make sure the parking brake is off. If you have both rear wheels off the ground, then just grab the hub and turn it (the other wheel will turn in the opposite direction). If the other wheel is on the ground, then you will need to put the transmission in neutral. Either way, make sure the front wheels are blocked, front and back, to prevent the car from rolling onto you.

thanks joegr, so basically if the car is in neutral, the hub should move freely? this has been a big help thanks!
