Have had a slight vibration in my front right wheel for over a year. Neither the dealer, who is actually halfway decent, or my actual mechanic, who is a genius, could figure out the problem. So over a year later after I first took it to get checked out, and the third total time I've had it looked at they find my problem. And before any commenters come in and tell me about all the other issues that could cause this, I had them all checked.

Apparently the driveshaft is in two pieces, and where the two parts connect there are splines, and mine are separating, which as explained quickly on the phone would add some play. So I'm happy they finally found the issue (if it is the actual issue).

But does anyone have any ideas what could cause this or why it would happen?

Also I want to point out a few things I've had happening to my car that I am curious if this might correct (I will update after I get it fixed and back to test) -

1) Say I'm traveling at 55mph in 5th gear. I'm set in SST 5th, so the car is not going to shift. Now I let off the gas slightly, and when I put my foot back down, the car gives a little bump - it feels like it's shifting almost. My arm-chair mechanic in me tells me this could most definitely be related to a driveshaft issue. The experienced LS driver in me tells me this kindov thing never happened on my previous LS, so it is a problem.

2) THE DAMN INTERMITTENT TICKING SOUND that I've been complaining about for over a year. Always seem to hear this sound coming from the passenger side, underside of the car. It comes and goes, even while driving. I feared the worst, like timing chains or tensioners at first, but this seems like it could be related.

3) Very rarely when I'd push the pedal to the floor quickly, I'd hear a mechanic "clank" coming from what sounded like the underside of the car.

Also, time to give more big props to the Ford ProCare factory extended warranty program, for being so awesome and saving me what I'm sure would be another $600+ job. Yay.

The crappy thing is the car only has 43k easy-driven miles.

my mark viii does that. the pumpkin is loose and rotates a bit under power.. but a loose drive shaft could easy give a similar effect.

Tell 'em to keep the driveshaft and take pics. Most interested in what that looks like.

Makes sense that bad splines would cause strange noises and engagement when changing power. ie, it unloads when you let off the gas, then reloads when you step on it. If the splines are breaking loose, everything would be moving and crunching back into place. Rather surprised they didn't just shear off if something went wrong. I'd think it has to be a manufacturing defect unless you have a LSD and some very sticky slicks on there.

The carrier bearing on the drive shaft. I had the same noise, replaced and smooth as hell.

I drop it off tomorrow to get fixed. I will ask if I can see it and take a picture. I am very curious myself.

My Ls bumps sometimes when I shift(MTX) and it's the half shafts being worn and loose on the inside CVs.

I've had a vibration underneath the car for a while. It's worse when it's cold, and is most noticeable around 45mph. I've been thinking it's the driveshaft or a wheel bearing in the rear wheels.

I got a look at the driveshaft and didn't take any pictures - it looked fine from the outside but there was a lot wiggle in the center joint. I was thinking maybe I'd see some damage from the way the tech explained it over the phone but everything was still tucked under a rubber covering.

Drove it some since then and that vibration is definitely cured. I have to wait till it gets warmer to see if it removed that damned ticking sound, but betting it did.

Mine was noticeable at 45 & 75 pretty much everytime. Sometimes it was worse sometimes not, didn't seem to depend on the weather.
