Bridgestone Blizzaks question...

So I purchased 4 allseasons yesterday; Sumitumo Touring LS-V's. They had good treadwear, traction, and temperature ratings and are V rated; also came with a 70,000mile warranty which will never happen in Pittsburgh. They happened to have Blizzaks on display while I was there and so I asked if I needed 2 or 4; he told me I could get away with 2 but 4 are recommended and not to be surprised if a law is passed next year requiring 4 snow tires on all vehicles. I asked why 4 on a RWD vehicle and he said it wasn't necessarily issues as far as handling but the issue with only running 2 Blizzaks is stopping. He says that you stop on the dime even on ice and if running only 2 Blizzaks, the rear would instantly stop but the front end would not, causing the front end to swing left or right.

like I said before, I see the point...good point at that, but I've never experienced an issue.

BTW I highly doubt any snow tire will "stop on a dime" on ice...hell of a sales tactic there...

Yeah, I would've laughed at that. Then bought tires somewhere else.

The only way you're getting any type of performance on ice is to buy studded tires or chains.

Or Autosocks :shifty:

Well Pittsburgh winters get pretty bad (lots of snow and ice) and my house is at the top of a nice steep hill. I don't understand why I would need all 4 if it is a RWD car?

To be able to stop. It is really not safe to mix your tires like that - it would be like going to a race track with 2 high end race tires and 2 walmart cheapies.

You would have 2 tires with good traction and 2 that have hardened due to cold and have lost their pliability and hence traction (different rubber compounds - A/S only effective down to about 0-4C.

I lived in san diego for four years and yes I saw it snow!!!!!!!!!

As for what LSinToronto said.... YES!!!!!!!!

Look at it this way what is cheaper? Four snow tires and being good to go, or 2 snowtires and then fixing or replacing car because you were only "should be ok"? Snow tires are something people like to mess with. I dont get it. You spend top dolar on everything else why not snow tires? I only put A/S on my LS but it also sitts under a tarp with the battery in the house untill it has rained a few good times after the snow is gone (damn salt has to clean off the roads) and thats at the earliest!!!!! I do have 4 toyo snow tires on the winter car and for the price of those tires (get used mroe than one year since I run summer tires the rest of the year, I get a couple winters of sure footed travel and dont have to pray that my front tires catch as well as my back ones.

I have to agree with svt. I have four Nokian R's, and the difference is amazing. It's pretty much ice/snow here (Winnipeg, Canada) from November through to March, and the hold the road almost like its summer.

Two rears will give you traction, but your braking and handling would improve a lot with four. Its a personal choice, but if your roads are anything like here, I would pay the extra for four.

Nokian R's are on my baby.

guess thats the difference with me, our avg snowfall for the year is like 21 inches...when it snows here, typically the roads are clear within 4-8 hours of the snow fall. no snow packed roads or anything...maybe thats why 2 is good enough here. 99% of people here don't use snow tires at all...in fact, most if not all tire places here have to order them in...they don't even stock them.

I live in a rural area, on a dead end road. It can be 48 hours before they plow my road. So I got this to alleviate the problem. A little more expensive than a set of snow tires, but I get some added utility out of it too:

that thing is so ugly my eyes actually hurt now! LMFAO

yeah I live in the sticks of Oh Canaduh, the snow doesnt get plowed often and if it does since i live on top of a mountain, it just blows right back across the roads........ driveway gets drifted in BIG TIME
