2002 Lincoln LS. After a two hour stop and go traffic jam suddenly when I depressed the brake pedal a sound started up. Sound seems to come from behind the firewall near the steering wheel area. It sounds like when you rub your hand against the bathtub. Anyway brakes were replaced about 6 months ago, and there is no such sound when I go in reverse. Plus when I get over about 60 mph the ABS light comes on and the sound goes away and the car brakes fine. I think it's some sort of pump (?) maybe a brake booster? Anybody familiar with this? I found a rebuilt replacement for about$70, the mechanic said it was an $800 part. Where could I get instructions to replace this myself? Thanks

You're a t00l. And your mechanic is an idiot.

Did you have the ABS system scanned for codes? No? Surprise...

You most likely have a bad or dirty ABS sensor. That rubbing sound is the ABS system kicking in. Why don't you ask google how ABS brakes work and educate yourself a bit?

And next time, search the forums a bit before starting with the questions. You're not the first one here with an LS, and you sure as hell aren't the first one with ABS problems.

Thanks frogman. I have had the ABS kick in and do know the difference. You may be correct about having the ABS codes looked at. I'll do that. I did check the forums and read the owners manual. Thanks for typing your thoughts.

Second the ABS sensor idea. Do at least pull the front wheels and make sure everything is still attached and solid.

Frogman is like that to almost everyone. Put a hefty filter on anything he says. The actual tech input is worthwhile, though.

What are you talking about?! He is KING..

Yea, check the codes and I can pull them up on ShopKey for you.. But it will have to be a scanner that is ABS compatible..

And to add to the above, when/if you take the wheel off, check for leaks.. That will cause the sounds and possiably shorting out the wheel speed sensor.. Highly unlikey.. But it's worth a check..

Or he could just replace both front wheel bearing/hub assemblies.

When this happened to me, it turned out that the wheel bearing on the front drivers side was bad, causing an erratic reading on the wheel speed sensor, which in turn caused the car to think the front wheels were locked up and ABS would come on, then it would get confused and the ABS light would come on.

I also had trac-control engage while accelerating on the highway.

theres my 2 cents :)

Frogman was right

Just wanted to circle back. Frogman was correct it was the right front wheel speed sensor that was causing the ABS issue.
