Big Brother is watching...

i'm unnerved a little as well but that doesn't mean they are going to stop doing what they are doing.

I don't see anything wrong with it. Well kind of. Keep what you want to keep personal to yourself and your conscious should not have any troubles.

In other words, if you don't have anything to hide why worry. And if you do, then keep it hidden.

Most of the people that use this are drunk or stoned college kids looking for neat things just to kill time.

that's not true at all. the technology is being sold to independent companies, government organizations and anyone else who wants to license it for their products (or strategies). it's not about hiding anything, it's about invasion of privacy. i don't want everyone and their mother to know there is a nice Lincoln LS at my street address with a very iffy-looking gate that thieves would be able to compromise in a matter of minutes. in the same way, pedophiles could use this technology to find out where schools are and what are the most vulnerable places on the property. just think about the implications. it opens the door to all sorts of voyeurism which, when put in front of billions of people, destroys most of peoples privacy.

also, it takes away the fun of visiting a place of the first time. i dont want to know what a street in Italy looks like because i want it to be a surprise when i get there. you could say, "oh, just don't look at it then," but that's not the right answer - the fact is, by publicizing all data like this, you desensitize yourself to it all.

Really, if the GOV wants to know, they have many ways and don't need to resort to google my friend. Its really conspiracy theories like the that ruin things. I also doubt your house is more likely to get broken into as well. If someone sees the opportunity regardless if they use google or just case out neighbor hoods its going to happen.

So you are also saying that phone books should not be published. Its just as easy to go ahead and pull an address from a phone book. People have been stalking and committing these types of serial rapes/murders successfully for years even decades before the use of a PC.

Yeah, the government has far a superior technology in use and doesn't need to resort to Ford Aerostars cruising around towns. They can see your license plate or face from many miles up in space.

this is true, but we're talking about google street view, not satellite technology which has been available to the private and government sectors for years now. the difference is street view will eventually enable the public sector to view whatever they want, whenever they want, and many of those images will compromise someone else's privacy. this includes schools, businesses, private homes, parks, and military infrastructure (though most governments are successfully blocking these images). if you are fine with that invasion, cool, we just have different opinions on the matter. i personally think less is better. we are very quickly moving towards a world where we need everything at our fingertips, instantly, as if we weren't lazy and spoiled enough.

by the way, JWerner, comparing this to a phone book isn't very realistic. you can't open a phonebook and see what someone's house looks like or what someone is wearing on the beach or how many kids are hanging out by the park. i know what you're getting at with that analogy but unfortunately it just doesn't work.

The comparison is very realistic giving the fact that as I said people have successfully been executing those types of offenses without the need for Google's crooked invasion of privacy!

It does work for you see it has been working this whole time.

You are going to tell me if you want to go to the beach and you see some good looking chick you wont look? Not that its justified but why would using google the streets do more harm?

I guess the pervs would just save that till they get home and Google hot chics on the beach!? Oh by the way, you might not need the street view to do so. ask.com, yahoo, etc... etc.. will all get you pictures of people sitting on the beach.

My point is that your argument has no realistic defense at all. This can and has all been done without the use of Google.

If that previously said gate is penetrable then what good is it?

Same concept as putting a lock on a glass patio door. If someone really wants to get in, they will. But MOST will be deterred.

If we were simply speaking of good, respectable, honest people, I wouldn't have any problem with that technology. But unfortunately, we're not. ANYONE can access this technology as long as they have an internet connection.

I understand that yes, someone can look up an address in a phone book, and go stake out a location. But MOST wouldn't, because they'd be afraid to, and feel it's just plain wrong. But now there is a tool which allows you to remain anonymous in the comfort of your own home, and - essentially - "spy" on damn near everywhere eventually. I mean, look at the amount of porn on the internet that - since you don't have the public shaming of going to the store and purchasing it - people can and do anonymously download. That online sector is effing HUGE compared to standard retail.

The scary part is not that people can see your house, we've been able to do that all along. The scary part is those people that only have a little bit holding them back from carrying out some crime, might now be more tempted to do so because of anonymity and the secrecy of completing a plan right from one's living room.

I hope I explained that right.

I understand that but nothing is going to hold a criminal back if it is in his criminal mind to do so.

Really, the views in Google the streets might be advanced for what was previously engineered but it still does not open up for anything.

Think about it, they take a picture on any random day. For all we know that could be the slowest most calm day for that area.

If I was a criminal I know I would rather case the place out time and time again and see what the routine is rather than just looking at a picture that could have been taken on the most off day.

One out dated still photo does not prove anything.

More and more municipalities are putting up cameras in fixed locations for spying purposes, I mean for weather and traffic etc....
Some of these are available online to the public and again, more and more will be. Pretty soon you will be able to be tracked at ground level as well as from outer space. And not just by our govt (just here to help) but by private firms that fund the installation then charge for the info it gathers and sells. Speeding tickets, redlight cameras, and such are the taglines they put on them so the sheep will think it's a good idea...

Live action or time lapse is a completely different story. That is one thing I would be weary of but honestly, someone prove me wrong. What purpose will a out dated still photo have when trying to "case" out a property?

Those morons that decide to use it are the ones that I am sure will be on one of those worlds worst criminal clips on you tube.

Indeed true, jwerner. It would be worse if it were actual real time video or something. The way they are using the technology still doesn't quite sit right with me.

Thats my point. Real time video will be coming to a nieghborhood near you soon and while the government will push it for safety reasons, it's main focus will be revenue and control. AND computer hacks will hack it like any other system.

if the goverment wants something from you it will happen regardless of what technology is available. they've probably been able to do all this ages ago and are on to newer stuff that the public won't know about till they get something better themselves

And that is exactly what criminals do; the ones that aren't executing random acts of crime. I seriously doubt they're going to use Google Street View to perform those actions for that very reason.
