Hello All, Im new here. Found this place on Google.

Anyways, the issue is with the LS from 2000. Since its been sitting, ive been cleaning it, taking it out for drives, oil change etc.. and trying to get it back into driving routine. But every so often, i get a BAD noise coming from what appears inside the engine.

To describe the sound, its a grinding noise that keeps with the rpm. The higher the Rpms go, the faster the grind. After the engine warms up, the noise goes away. If you let the engine cool and restart it, the noise is still gone. But if you let it sit for a Day without starting, good chance noise will come back for its 5 minutes of glory before the engine warms up and its gone.

Anyways you can see the noise on You Tube:

I uploaded it so you guys can see it. Thanks for any help guys!

Wow that sounds really Bad and I dont recomend driving it anywhere, I would take a wild guess and say its tensioner related. Im sure other fellow members will chime in.

Welcome to LVC :)

If I have learned anything from my short time here its always the coils, If the car has a coolant leak, its the coils, if your steering wheel falls off its the coils.

It could be one of the pulleys, although tensioners may make that noise too.

Could def be the tensioner, could be the alternator, AC compressor, Fan, anything on the serpentine. Could even be an exhaust leak if the noise goes away when warm. Could be an injector. I would take a hose... any cheap hose and start by using it as a stethoscope and placing it against these pieces while the sounds is occuring to narrow down exactly where it is coming from.

wow thanks for replys! And thanks for the welcome.

"I'm gonna take a shot in the dark and say the fan is going bad. "
--The Fan isn't spinning at All. Like not even if the engine gets hot. Nothing.

-- The AC doesn't blow cold at all.

The noise goes away after 2- 3 minutes. ive notice that even after engine has been off for few hours, it wont come back unless it sits off for 2 days really.

Edit: Car has 74,000 Kilometers on it (not miles). So its still a young infant.

Well, you can pop the belt off and start it cold and see if the noise is still there or not. (Don't run it for very long without the water pump going.)

That actually is a good idea. I did the stethoscope thing, it sound like the sound is coming from within the engine. Like against the engine block is when you hear it most. Problem is it goes away after 3 minutes run time. o_O

Can it be tensioner is it goes away? I thought it will continue to make that sound?

Yes, at first the chains will only make noise when the engine is cold (with a bad tensioner). The noise comes from the chain(s) rubbing on the block and/or valve covers. As the metal heats up and expands, the noise goes away.

Actually have you used a long screwdriver before, workes much better then a piece of hose.

take longest screwdriver you have in your tool box,
place it on the block somewhere, where you suspect the noise.

have the handle part of the screw driver upwards and touch the end of handle to your ear.

works best if you lean into the little flap before your inner ear channel.
acts a little as a dampener.

go around the engine and place screw driver on solid parts, listen on end
of screwdriver handle and find where the noise is most destinctive and loudest.

@ lincoln_zero

~ Yeah that sounds like the secondary tensioners are worn right down and the inside of the block is taking a beating from the timing chain.

take notice of the second picture where it says "Chain had eaten the block here"

Cool huh ?

chains guides are most likely worn down from beating on it. lots of WOT will do this.

search the forum, plenty of guys have been there, bought the t-shirt.

check this thread here http://www.lincolnvscadillac.com/showthread.php?t=62335

PS: keep driving it like that and you'll end up needing an engine swap.
That chain goes and it's GAME OVER

Best of luck !!!

K damn to repair this is gonna be costly. With the screw driver trick it sounds like its coming from within the engine. Wich means its likely the timing chain.

I dont get it. This engine has 74,000 original kilometers. I know it sat for a bit, but can sitting around cause a tensioner to go bad? Its such a young engine..

Also. it NEVER made that sound before it was parked. This was my aunts car. She gave it to me. I start it up and its making this wining sound. Can it be something to do with the Belt? Alternator? I notice the power is coming in at 13.4 Volts when engines running. My other LS (a 2002) the Voltage is 14.2 when running.

Do what post #8 said to do. It can be anything but that type of sound is more like a buzzing and not a knocking or ticking sound. With the low mileage I don't think it's your chains. Sounds more like the alt got wet somehow. Would explain the low voltage reading.

@BlackLS06

Thanks =)

And thank you everyone for your help. your guys have been awesome! Its gonna be some work to get that belt off, and to be honest i might take it to a friend who can take the belt off for me. Anyhow, within the week i should know what it is. Would you guys like me to post back when i find out what was causing the sound (after i pull the belt with my friend)?

Edit: If it still makes that sound its going to a mechanic, so when he figures it out i can post?

Remove intake parts that are in the way. Insert a smallish pull bar in the 1/4" square hole on the tensioner. Move the tensioner to relieve pressure from the belt and pop it off one of the upper pulleys. Remove the pull bar. You can twist the belt and pull it out from behind the tensioner. (I've seen others say they have to loosen the bolt holding the tensioner on to do this, but I never have.)

Putting the belt back on is harder. It's easier with two people, but it can be done with just one.

Hey lincoln_zero,

any update on this, how did you fair out ?

did you try running it without the belt to see if the noise went away, like Joe suggested ?

was it that or are you into the tentioners now ?

or something else all together ?
