So I was checking out prices on the f900 and came across the f700 for about two or three hundred dollars cheaper. They seem about the same, and if it's just a smaller screen that's OK with me. I just want good sound with my Alpine system, and some GPS that will bring the ultimate navigation win.

Question is, either of these systems, do they fit in tight with the factory brackets? just screws on the sides and thats it?

What kind of modifications will I need for the wiring to get all jiggy?

Are there any adapters for the steering wheel controls for either systems?

What about a external CD Changer eh?

Just some basic information on how these install in the LS basically, I want to get everything squared away before my birthday comes up. Hoping I can get my tires taken off the list of stuff I owe my parents for and this can be next!

First of all you'll need a kit which you can get from sonicelectronix.com for cheap. I'm assuming you have the subwoofers in ther trunk?
 
02, the only year with Alpine system available...

My 2000 has the Alpine system.

As far as the wiring goes, it's simple. I spliced RCA cords for my sub and center pre outs. The sub amp is mono as well as the amp for the center speakers.
 
What the above poster said. It's easy even though I didn't have to do that because I don't have the subs in my trunk but that's how you can do it though.
 
What about the unit into the factory wiring? are there adapter or is it soldering? I don't mind either way, soldering is a favorite pass time of mine :D
 
Soldering is involved, if you want to do it right. You can get some connectors that mate to the stock harness connectors in the car, so that you don't have to mess that up (handy if you ever want to return it to stock). But, you will still want to solder the radio harness to the connector pigtails. Also, there are a few connections to make that aren't available from the stock connectors. (VSS, backup, dashlighting, ...)
 
you will want to get the Metra 70-5519 wire harness (audiophile or mach 460 harness) on top of having the 98 and up ford harness, it will have the factory sub plug with it that will just plug in to the sub out(RCA connectors) on the AVIC and will plug right into the sub amp connector behind the radio. the only differences between the 900 and the 700 is that the 900 will play DVD's, MSN direct and it has high gloss black plastic instead of the flat black with sparkles. the screen size is the same
 
I used the crimp-able couplers. I don't know what they're called, they look like little red tubes. I would've done it the other way, if I had time... and if I hadn't lost the tools after I stabbed that guy in the face with my soldering iron...

I had to do a complete solder into a harness for my friends caprice, some 10 odd connections, took like 5 minutes because were pro at it though :D We also used heat shrink on the connections but his heat gun thing didnt work, so we put a light to it :D

Yeah I dont need any damn DVD's, as long as it has Aux input I can use my laptop for a screen.
