I was wondering with us in the middle of the summer heat season what your cars mpg is? My old '02 LS V6 i had to calculate the mpg manually after a full tank refill. Now with the V8 LS it has the computer thing that figures the avg mpg and its driving me nuts. Its like i just watch it all the time. Today, after a complete refill and driving around town, stop and go, some slow moving, non-highway driving the computer only showed a avg mpg of 15.6 after approx. 20 miles of driving. That is aweful. I mean, it drives very smooth, accelerates great, no noticable drivability issues. And i'm not flooring it at every stoplight. On the highway however i consistanly get 25-27 mpg. After a full tank the average is about 19-20 mpg. Do any of you more experienced people think the heat and humidity is the cause of this piss poor city mileage. I dont pay for my gas so its not a $$$ issue, its just that i watch the numbers all the time and dont understand whats going on.

my display says 19.0-19.3, mixed driving. it never really changes beyond that.

The MPG in this car sucks! But , i guess, it does have the V8.

i have an 00v8 and i average18 around town and i get up to 25 on the highway. i also just figured out that my wifes 00 cadillac deville with the 4.7 northstar gets better mpg around town.. i`ve gotten it up to 21.5 .. the cadillac has the instantaneous mpg readout also and i average 37 mpg after i hit the cruise at about 53... i wish i had it in the ls also, so that i can learn the car better. because some places or habbits that i have which i thought saved gas was actually the opposite after studyin the instantaneous readout for about a week on my wifes car. my average before the lil study was about 17 around town.. made a huge difference.. one big thing i noticed is that if you hit resume to activate your cruise control at the lowest speed possible which is about 30 on my ls, and let the cruise control resume u`r current speed it also gets better numbers.

How often do you reset the computer. After this last reset the city driving was 15 !!!! My Intrepid also has a much better trip computer. It has a separate trip odometer, instant mpg, avg. mpg, distance till empty, clock timer. I am looking at the window sticker for my LS and it states "Between 14-20 City driving". Does the high heat/humidity made it stay at the lower end? I mean 15 mpg is more like SUV mileage.

15mpg city really isn't that bad, especially for a v8. yes the heat def. makes a difference. most v8 suv's are single digits mpg in real world city driving. your ls should have distance till empty on the info center. you should also have 2 trip odometers.

Well i guess that makes me feel alittle better. I find that the distance till empty is useless until your down to like 2-3 gallons. Also the A & B trip odometers only go up to 999 then resets to 001. Dumb. I usually use those to measure my oil changes. But its it been hotter than hell here so i guess this is about the worst mpg i will see.

you have to let the computer average out the whole tank, you cant take a 20 mile sample, it will be unreasonable. My 04 gets 19-20MPG average per tank. I do mainly city driving. It was EXTREMELY hot and humid here in Chicago for a few weeks too. If I calculate MPG by hand compared to what the computer calculates, the computer is only off by .1 MPG on average.

15 city only 25 highway only average about 18-19. this is jax fl, 95 today with 80 per humidity. i would rather live in 115 degree arizona than live here.

I only get 12-13 around town and I don't even have a heavy foot!! There has to be something wrong somewhere with that.

I get about 16/26...sucks, just about as bad as my modded 4.6 Cougar.

I calculate mine by the trip odometer and the amount of gas I pump...definitely more accurate than the computer.

hey fla02 I just checked my trip odometer (on my way to watch OSU pummel NI today)...anyhow mine go to 9999.9 miles. 03 v8 fwiw. strange yours only go to 999?

i get about 15.5 mpg all city driving on my 02 V8 LSE 270 miles to empty on a full tank. its bad

My '06 ha s a four-digit (five if you count the tenths) trip odometer, as well. I didn't look closely enough to see if the first digit was capable of displaying a full digit or just a 1, but my Trip B currently shows just a bit over 1,200 miles.

I get 14 mpg in Clearwater, and 24 mpg on I75 from ATL to Tampa... I can't seem to get any better. That's taking it fairly easy and with cruise control.

here is a question, how many of you with the SST are leaving the car in D5 and not controling the shifts?

I know from spousal experience that our LS gets much better mileage when it is driven in sst mode in the city.

I hardly if ever use the SST. If anything in city traffic i'll keep it in D4.

Well, it couldn't hurt could it?? All I can tell you is that my wife's car 'short shifts' so much in city traffic that it is on the verge of lugging all the time.
if you use sst and allow the motor to actually rev up a bit it will get better mileage.
remember Lincoln wrote the logic in the transmission shift routines to try and beat the epa tests not work in the real world.

second why did you only want input from FL owners. We all experience heat and humidity at various times this summer.

For the last few months I have been around 18-19 mpg but recently its up in the high 19's. This is I guess city driving but its not always stop and go. I find you get good mileage around town if you fill up and take the LS to the highway and let it stretch out abit. Doing over 70 is not a good idea but after a couple HWY trips I noticed good mileage for a tank or two.

I just started to do my own calculating and found that the computer is rather close on mine. Just when you do this whole figuring on your own its best to go to the same place(I go to the Shell next to my house), use the same pump(pump #14)(each pump varies) and do not top off, just let it go to when it clicks off.

I heard that summer is when you get more outta your gas cause the heat makes it expand. Now it being hot, hot I am sure that goes to waste cause the car is going be working harder to keep itself cool.

And finally, I usually have to get gas after 260 miles, give or take 15 either way although I do not usually let it go past the last line.

Hey Beamer a couple of questions,
first you say not to top off, then how are you certain you are getting to the same level of full'ness'?
I agree that each pump is different, but even the pump will not shuf off at exactly the same point every time. Part of the shut off is controled by the change in pressure of the vapors rising back up the fill neck. This venting pressure changes in the heat so I would doubt that you would always get the same level of fill in the tank. I top off until I can see the fuel just under the restricter in the fill neck. Then I know that I'm at the same liguid volume everytime I leave the pump.

the other question how often do you and the others check their tire pressures?
The heat makes the tire's pressures run a lot higher. Higher pressures affect the rolling resistance and moment of the tires.

The topping off is a iffy situation. I have just heard it many times to use the same pump and let it auto shut off. Now you say you get it to just before the restricter, well that probably works just as well. I figure its probably equaling out if it shuts off or if you give it some more cause not everyone checks to see if the fuel is up to the restrictor or not. I know I usually just rounded up to the next dollar like if it stopped at 21.45, I would try for 22. I wish it was that cheap lol.

I think I well know check it out the next couple of fill ups, see if it stops at the same point, of course if I cannot see the fuel than I won't be able to tell.

I check my tire pressure every few days because my two front tires leak alittle, especially the drivers side. The rears usually remain at 33 or 34psi and I usually only fill to 34psi anyway. I cannot wait to get my warranty refund cause I am going to get new tires w/ some of it. Wish I had the warranty still or refund cause today I just got a screw in my rear drivers tire, not leaking but it needs to be fixed.
