At the dealer for ETC code

You really shouldn't drive with that problem. If I were you I would buy 8 new oem coils and try that out, if it's not the coils then atleast you have a new set for when your do crap out. I drove with my coils too long too and damaged the pcm. Your going to damage your cats like that too.

Your symptoms were exactly like mine?

hesitation at abour 50+, ETC fail safe came on, then it got worse. Dealer first said throttle body so I bought one and put in on but nothing, asked here and was told to switch coil #4 with the one on the driver side, furthest away from the driver to check if it was a coil cause coil 4 causes interference when it misfires, and ETC didn't come back on. Took it back to the dealer and they later also said it was the coils. I finally did all 8 and she drove good for about 2 weeks but by then I had jacked up my pcm and the miss fires came back on cause the pcm went crazy on me. A few hundred bucks later, a new pcm, reprogrammed new pcm, and she drove like a champ, finally.

You really wont lose anything by buying 8 new coils and seeing if it is that since you'll be using them sooner or later.

Dealer just called.

Coils are fine, absolutely no problem. I was quoted 1488 to replace the throttle body, and throttle actuators (which he claimed to be on the wheels...or brakes..or whatever)

The $1488 includes a $30 oil change and the $199 diagnostic fee.

What kinda crap is this. for 1488 I can buy another LS. I just remembered why Lincoln dealers are closing down. Because every simple thing is a nightmare or disaster.

Good to see things haven't changed!! bend over and take it in the can. I'll take my Fusion any day!!

You know, I had some respect for you, up until you made up that story about buying a better car than you actually did. (No, I didn't buy that story about it being some other car that just happened to be in your driveway.)

I put the global automotive coils in today. 110 for 8 of them. Car runs good as new. F**king dealership told me the coils are good so they dont have to do the warranty work and charge me 1400 for ETC and throttle actuator replacement.

THANK YOU GUYS FOR YOUR HELP....HELL YEAH..I LOVE THIS FORUM

Wait so they were going to charge you that to do the throttle body work or they did charge you?

I came to the dealer with the actual hard copy of the coil warranty. The rep said they know about the ignition coil problem and will check it. If the coils are the problem, no diagnostic fee, and the repair is free. If not, then its a 200 dollar fee, plus to fix any problem.
They call me and say the coils are fine. Its the ETC and the throttle actuator. To replace both I got quoted around 1400 or so. I said hell no. 7 hours of labor? 500 for a throttle body and 300 for the actuator? No way. And I had to pay $200 to get my car out of there at the end of the day.
Last week I ordered ebay coils, and today I got my personal mechanic to put them in. Problem is gone.
Obviously the dealer would rather charge me 1400 than just fix the coils, for which they would get what...300 bucks from Ford Motor?

scumbags...I already spoke to my attorney about suing the dealership.

Yeah, I was told the same about the etc failsafe being the throttle body. Just spent 300 to replace a good throttle body cause it was the coils on mine as well

Apparently, you needed to take them the TSB that explains how to test the coils. Here it is for anyone else that might have this problem.

coils, who knew

Apparently, not most of the dealers. I can think of no excuse for this.

BTW, in case anyone missed it, Ford's killing off the Mercury division. Unfortunately, it seems like Lincoln is going to be the new Mercury, which still isn't much more than rebadged Fords.

She runs great now. MPG up as well. AC full blast with stop and go city driving I got 10 mpg, before it was about 8.5. Regular city driving with AC I'm getting about 16 17 mpg.

She got a wash and wheel maintenance today. :)

i was having the same problem with my car hesitating, my car threw a bunch of codes dealing with the TAC module and what not. My friend at the dealer said the ford computer says replace all the coils and plugs and if that doesnt work then move onto the throttle body. So i replaced all of them myself and the car feels great. I was getting about 14mpg in the city before and now im getting around 18mpg which is great. On a side note when i pulled a couple of the plugs out there was a little bit of oil, what could that be? My car is a 2005 LS. Also the next day my car threw another engine code and I scanned it, the code read that the car was running too lean in bank 1, what could that mean? thanks

Do you mean oil on the outside part of the plug? If so, then the o-ring seal(s) on the valve cover(s) are starting to seep. If it is enough to fill the bottom of the plug wells, then you need to replace the gasket sets, otherwise your new COPs will be killed eventually.

Lean on bank 1 (passenger side) could be one or more of several things.
air leak, clogged injector(s), misfires, bad O2 sensor, timing chain issues, clogged converter(s)?, ...

(I'd check the converters because it sounds like you have been running with misfires for a while. The extra gas you were consuming was being burned in the converters.)

thanks, and the oil was on the threads of the plug

As long as the plug didn't look fouled, I would assume that it is external. If it only was on the threads and not on the white insulator, I think that you can wait awhile before changing the VCGs.
