Well I just blew a head gasket. Since the motor is getting pulled to change them out now is the time to do it. I know there is a handful of guys that did it. I need to know what is involved besides heads, intake and fuel rails? Any other hard parts? And is this a straitforward swap or is there a lot of fab work involved? i.e throttle cables, egr, deleting the IMRCs. Thanks.

Are you sure that the head gaskets are bad? The only reason I am asking is that the mod motors need to really be cooked to blow the head gaskets....

As far as C heads go you will need to run a C head intake... so there is all the work to go along with that, Unity should know about running C head intakes in a Mark....

Dang it kid...

So ya. Pretty easy swap. If you wish to just do the heads you will need exhaust manifolds too.

• Intake manifold (99+ Cobra or 03+ Mach)
• Cobra or Mach throttle body. Not sure if a Gen II TB will work
• Cobra throttle cable (your stock cruise will probably work, it did for me)
• EGR tube (if your into that sorta thing)
• Exhaust manifolds
• 03/04 heads would be best, either Cobra or Aviator

The Cobra intake cams are best but Aviator exhaust cams are the best. Odds are Aviator heads will be cheaper. If you feel up to it, you could then swap in some Cobra intake cams and get the best stock-part setup.

You will need some custom exhaust work to mate up to the cat-less driver-side manifold. You will need to modify the steering in a way to clear the exhaust manifolds. Pretty straight forward, a few have done it just to upgrade manifolds.

Your stock engine harness will probably work but may need some very minor extension of sensor wires. Overall it should not be a problem unlike a Gen 1.

You will need a tune to kill the IMRC, AIR trigger for the CE.

While I don't have C-heads on my car, I do have a set of them that I'm planning to install. If you want to do it on the cheap, get a set of the intake adapters off a 99 continental, and you can bolt a B-intake to C-heads. Also, the exhaust side is the same from B to C heads, so you can re-use your stock manifolds if you want.

What is the point of running C heads if you are going to run a B head intake when you already have B heads that a B head intake bolts right on to?

I made him take out the baby spoon lols....

get him this for Xmas

You can run C head exhaust manifolds on B heads, you can NOT run B exhaust manifolds on C heads. Yes, they fit but they are too restrictive and the ports are way too small. But since the C ports are larger they work VERY well on B heads. Its not a two way street.

And I agree. Why the heck would anyone be stupid and install B everything on C heads. Spent all that time to not really improve things to optimal. It like rebuilding an engine but not bothering to at least clean it up.

Or, like with me, you need a whole new engine. Otherwise yes, its more work than worth. In this case there *may* be bad head gaskets. So new engine or just swap heads?

If you dont have the money for the intake yet I could see going with the b intake. And you dont have to modify anything to make em fit.

Yes. Or so I was told. On TCCoA it was mentioned that they are already made to fit C heads.

Gotta love the google....

‘03 DOHC head: (‘03+ Aviator, Marauder, Cobra, Mach 1, Australian Boss 260/290)
Featuring a nearly identical (though 17cc larger in volume due to the fact that they are also used on the much larger Australian Boss 260/290 5.4L DOHCs) intake port to the FR500 head, but combining it with a newly designed, larger and more rectangular exhaust port, these may be the best all around DOHC Ford heads ever manufactured. The improvements made to the intake port shape over previous years include a raised port roof and the introduction of a short radius turn in the throat of the intake port that helps assure the incoming air charge finds the combustion chamber. For those with a forced induction street/strip motor, these are without question the best heads available, and as with the FR500s, they should produce great power up to and beyond 8000rpm regardless of application. ’03 DOHC heads also feature higher quality head castings from the supplier, which is at least partially responsible for the modest increase in flow vs. earlier castings--chalk that up to Ford’s revised quality control standards.
Early runs of the ’03 DOHC head fell victim to the same #6,7,8 cylinder coolant flow problems as earlier tumble port castings. In mid ’03 Ford made a running revision to the ’03 DOHC heads that allowed for more coolant to circulate through the affected areas. A blue mark on the driver’s side head indicates an updated casting, and there are no additional revisions to the ’04 version of this design.
The Bottom Line: On all accounts these are the best modular four valve heads currently available. They combine the exceptional flow of a slightly larger FR500 intake port with a gigantic new rectangular exhaust port.

Stock Intake Choices: ‘99/’01 Cobra, ‘03/’04 Mach 1 & Aviator, ’03 Marauder, FR500.
Aftermarket/Modified Stock Intake Choices: Al Papitto short runner/ported ‘99/’01 Cobra, MP/Sullivan carb intake, FR500, Aviator.
’03 DOHC head dimensions: Combustion Chamber: 52cc, Intake Port Vol.: 177cc, Intake Port Entrance: 1.960”x1.350”, Valves: 37mm Int., 30mm Exh.

In Conclusion
Our panel of experts surmised that aside from the nearly unobtainable ‘00R heads, the ’03 DOHC heads are without question the right choice for your Modular four-valve performance application . The combination of a slightly larger FR500 intake port and modified throat region, coupled with a new larger rectangular exhaust port, and a relatively low price (due to it’s widespread use in the Ford organization) makes the ’03 DOHC casting the current head stud of Ford’s Modular stable.
After porting, the relatively small stock valves/seats become the most serious flow limitation; as such aftermarket replacements should be a serious consideration for those looking to squeeze every last drop of performance from their DOHC heads.

The C exhaust ports are the same shape, just bigger I believe....

Here are the exhaust ports on all 4.6 dohc heads, straight from my garage.

B heads = 93-98 Mark VIII,96-98 Cobra

C heads = 99-01 Cobra and Continental

03+ C heads = 03-04 Cobra,03-04 Mach 1, 03-04 Marauder , 03-05 Aviator

FR500 heads

BTW all models 03+ 4.6 dohc heads have the same valve-train and cams.

Thanks guys. Looks to be to much work for to get this to work. The exhaust/steering linkage kinda kills it for me in terms on money and time involved. I have to realistically look at what I can afford and go from there. If I'm pulling the motor I might have it freshened up while the motor is out.
