Another wheel question

Im thinking about wheel adapters, go to something like 114mm or whatever, something more common ya know. Now if I got them and then found some rims that I liked but they didnt have the proper offset, the wheel adapter itself would add more/positive to the offset correct?

sure, i think thats one reason for adapters, the other would be to change the lug pattern

wouldn't that make it harder to find good wheels with an even higher offset, go too high and the center of the wheel will stick out further than the edge of the tire,
