ive been searchin around but i dont think i found an answer. here lately ever since its became cold when i turn the steerig wheel theres a slight whine. i checked my power steering fluid an it was low so i added some an it was supposed to stop it but it hasnt. its not even very loud likeif the music is on i cant even hear it and some days it doesnt do it what so ever. an it doesnt do it over bumps or driving its strictly only coming from when i turn the wheel. idk if the cold had something to do with it to an when it got warmer it might quit.

Ford power steering pumps are notorious whiners. Especially after being run low.

My experience with fords(not sure if the PS is ford or jag) is that their PS pumps tend to whine as they get older. You might need to flush out your old fluid with new PS fluid, but I'm not sure it would help.

so basically theres prlly no fix except to get a new one. how much do you think it would run me for one

I hope you added Mercon(R) automatic transmission fluid and not power steering fluid, if you did you need to correct to the right fluid. There is a TSB for 2003 to 2005 LS's to correct a noise which consisted of adding 50ml of Motorcraft friction modifier, pn: XL-3. I had this problem and the friction modifier took care of the low speed maneuvering noise.

There's a supplier on here that gives LVC good discounts but you're looking at $150-190.

hey were u thinking I was talking aout the tranny intead ofpower steern fluid. i kno the tranny takes mercon an could be good to add the modifier but i didnt tink thatd have anyting to do with the slight whine when i turn. i was just tryingto make sure an understand everything everyone was saying and making sure I or someone else wasnt confused. or were you meaning that maybe its the tranny making it. sorry for any ttypos or anything becus im on my phone from work so its hard for me to see and type.

It's really hard to find Mercon where I live now, the dealership told me that ford says to use Mercon V in it's place.

The power steering on the Lincoln LS uses transmission fluid, Mercon, that is what I'm talking about and TSB I mentioned, so if you added power steering fluid to your Lincoln LS power steering you are wrong and need to replace it with Mercon.

From your 2003 OWNERS MANUAL:"Power steering fluid - Motorcraft MERCON ATF".

As he said, you have to use Mercon transmission fluid for the power steering, not "power steering fluid." Here is the procedure to flush the fluid out.

oh ok thanks ill look at the link when i get home. how come we have to put tranny fluid in for our power steering fluid? an do i need to add any addidtive like i think was stated earlier today

also is there pics of this whole thing such as the inlet port an retur hose and such just so i can make sure i do everything right and make it easy.

Because ford felt, after testing and design, it works better for their power steering units, the correct additive is inexpensive will help.

Kind of OT, but what are the consequences of overfilling the reservoir?

Mine was just above the middle mark, and when I added the friction additive it creeped up above the MAX line. I have been driving with it like this for a few days now with no problem, should I be worried about the extra bit?

I would say it is one hash mark above MAX, so if there was another line added, it would be there.

I think that you'll be okay. If it bothers you, then get something to suck some of it out.

If it gets way too high (full to the cap) then it might damage some seals as the reservoir pressurizes. (It's not supposed to pressurize, and the air gap in there makes sure that it won't.)

Okay that makes me feel better.

Since adding the friction modifier stuff, I think my steering wheel creak is gone. I can't remember lol. Will have to pay attention to it tomorow morning.

does anyone have pics i can use along witthe right up so itll b alot easier for me. an i knewi should have asked herefirst but i stopped in autozone real quick on my way to school an they said just power steering fluid that they had would be fine for the car an wha do u know it' its not. now its guna cost me even more money buying and sucker and mercon trannt fluid d additive

i just stopped by walmart cus its the only thing open and i got some supertech mercon v for auto trannys. you all said this would work just fine correct?

thanks this helps alot but I still just have one question. when it says plug the reservoir inlet port, which one is that exactly and how would I plug it. Also which one is the return hose. pictures would be great if anyone has access to that. I just dont want to screw anything up or get air in my lines and have a bigger problem because this is my DD. thanks

The inlet port is the one that you disconnect the return hose from. It's the smaller of the two hoses attached to the reservoir. Here's a drawing of it.

update and finished

ok I included some pics just for fun and so theres atleast something to look at. It was harder then expected mainly because I had to get everything together, and never having doing this before made it difficult for the first time but im sure if I had to do it again it wouldnt be that bad. The gay part was because I have an k and n air intake kit, it was in the way so I had to completly take it off and all the brackets to it as well as unbolted the bolts for the power steering reserv so I could get my arms and hands in there and be able to work... on a side note, mercon v tranny fluid smells like the worst SH** ever and I was in a hurry and got some on my hands and clothes and it was horrible lol. I also used one of the plastic bolts in the engine compartment to plug up the line and tape held it in. sorry for the ghetto rig red tape but its all the duck tape I had at the time. but thanks for all the help guys, I couldnt have done it without

oh sorry i was in a hurry to class and forgot to type that. to be honest i cant say 100 percent for sure because like i said before it comes and goes and my local advanced auto didnt have the friction modifier. where would be the best place to try and get it at? so ill wait until i add that to say forsure if its fixed but it did seem quieter.
