For about the past week when I turn on my car the gauges go all the way up then down to normal. Not all of the time though. What is the cause of this? The car seems to be running fine but it has done this before but not this much.

Usually, it means your battery is weak and going to fail soon. If it's four or five plus years old, just replace it. If it's younger than that, then take it [the battery] for a load test somewhere. It's not a bad idea to check your alternator too. If you have a voltmeter, you can do this yourself.

If it's not the battery or alternator, then I would suspect a loose electrical power or ground connection somewhere.

Note that if you replace the battery, you need to get the correct OEM type battery with the vent tube connection.
