So after the car sat outside for about 7h @-5C (23F), it wouldn't start at the end of the day. Had to get a boost at my work's parking lot. Shiny car that won't start - embarrassing.

Now, what I don't understand is why did the car refuse to start given the variables as mentioned above, when it previously started just fine multiple times, while sitting inside my garage for twice as long, and three times as cold?

I believe the alternator is fine, as it fired right up after a restart once I got home. We will see tomorrow.

What should I expect to pay for a new battery from the dealership?

As it gets colder the battery has to work harder to turn the car over. It does this using cold cranking amps.

On top of that over time batteries lose storage capacity and eventually it gets to the point that the battery just wont hold enough juice. If the battery is the original from 2003 then id say its past overdue that you replace it.

I had the same problem just last month, got a new battery from the dealer for about $160 Can. So far so good, and doesnt seem to be getting weaker.

I'm not surprised if it's still the original, but I really can't tell.

Thanks Villalta.

Oh, by the way, the "magic eye" on the battery is green, with some red. Research shows it just means the batter is low, but I can't find any official info.

Maybe. I just hooked it up to the charger - it's at around 45%. Will see what tomorrow brings.

Oh and I've had phantom things happen for a while now: Check traction control, svc parking brake, rear defrost turning off (as per manual, means battery is low). Pretty sure it's time..

7 Years is much longer than most batteries last.

Ive seen some only last 4 years.

Paid $109.50 US for mine last week.

There is someone with a 2000 that has the original battery..

I'm not suprised, you can get lucky and have a battery last. Mine was the original from 2003 and I just replaced it last summer. I'm willing to bet if I had stayed in Texas instead of moving to MN, I would still be using that battery.

Having a system or turning accessories on decreases a battery's life.. its more of a long term effect.. and more of the first one.. ;)

Well the cold weather is making my LS think the parking brake needs servicing, so I just ordered a new OEM 750 Amp battery.

..which will be here in 2 weeks :shifty:

(that's -13F)

Ohh blahh.. We had -11* with a 20 mph wind.. It was close to -30 with the windchill.. But, that was last week.. It's getting a little warmer now.. lol

That's good that you got the new battery.. :)

Try having a broken inside driver's door handle. Looks pretty classy when I have to roll down the window, and stick my arm out to open the door using the outside handle.

try topping this.. broken passenger door "window regulator" and "door handle" , not so bad for the girlfriend to open, but no so good going down the highway

Dinosaur thread bump.

Since installing the new battery, I haven't had a single issue starting. With warmer temperatures, the car starts right up after 2 cranks.

Thank you all!
