So the other night my battery light came on while drivg and my lights flickered. I parked it and hoped it would go away. Yesterday I came out to my car and it started fine but the battery light was still on. So I too k it to autozone. And they said the alternator is shot. I drove it to work No problem and after work the battery light wasnt on and hasn't been on sense. Is it possible it's something elses

My alt went out and the battery light never came on until the voltmeter in my car read 9.8. I would have someone else test it if you don't trust the autozone cats.

probably a voltage regulator. mine would flicker occasionally and it was the voltage regulator.

When I bought my car off Jamie, the battery light was on but sometimes it would go off. I found out that there are diodes (4 I believe) in the alternator that can go bad and each diode spins and works at 120 degrees rotation.

Anyway, I drove the car for a few months like this, not knowing that the diodes were simply just going bad and finally, one day I started it and I noticed that the air ride acted like it was struggling to air up. I got about a mile down the road and then the light show got started. Everything on the dash started flickering off and on and then the car just died.

I bought a new 850/1000 battery from AZ over the phone (using my check card) and one of the workers brought it to me and installed it right where the car had died. I then had enough power to last me until I went to AZ and bought a reman from them with a lifetime warranty. I put it in and replaced the cracked 3 wire connector with a good one and that alternator lasted about 2 weeks and then it went bad. I took it back and got it replaced and haven't had a problem since.

O'Reilly's sells a reman under the name of Ultima and AZ sells one under the name of Duralast. In the 94 I had, I went through 3 Ultima alternators so I can safely say that they suck. The Duralast alternators are hit and miss. It might be junk out of the box and last a week or two and then again, you might get one that goes for years.

I do know that O'reilly's can get you a true Motorcraft reman with a 1 year warranty but AZ or Advanced can't.

If your battery light is off, it's charging and if it's on, it's not charging. Get the $40 alternator and have it tested and if it's good, install it and you should be fine, until it goes bad. Who knows when that will be?

The alternators in our cars can be killed with just a few WOT's because you're spinning them too fast. This goes for AZ and Oreilly's reman alternators but I have done many WOT's with the one I have now and I guess I got lucky with this one because it's still charging in the 14.? range but if and when it does go bad, I'll get another for free. I'm not saying that AZ has the best re-mans out there but they are better than the Ultima brand. I was burning them out and not doing any WOT's. I think the stereo system I have was killing them, idk.

So, if you can spare the $40, then get it and save up for a good one because what you have now has limited days before it's completely shot. The $40 might carry you for another 1 to 5 years. You never know and you don't know that the $40 isn't already a reman, which most likely it is.

Best part about it is that it is an easy alternator to replace. Like Chris said, it could be the voltage regulator but it is built into the alternator.

not so. easy to replace on a gen 2 alt. a gen 1 is not easy to get apart. if you have a gen 1, don't bother, do what no limit said (and try to get a gen 2 alt, they have slotted lower bolt holes.)

then find a gen 2 alt if you can.

i quit screwing with gen 1 alts long ago.
i'm still screwing with gen 2 alts, but at least they are easier for me to rebuild.

Gen I 93-95 are built by mitsubishi. Gen I 96 and Gen II 97/98 are ford, and are the same. You can use any Ford alternator on a 93-95, you just have to undo the harness, so you can stretch the alt. harness over to the opposite side.
I always recommend having your alternator rebuilt by a local business. I had mine rebuilt by a local place, for $100 cash out the door. This included a new rear bearing installed in a new rear ford cobra 130 amp housing, with a new regulator and tested. You can't beat it.

Oh I forgot to mention but also the day u came out my car was sitting offly higher then normal and on the ride to auto zone the compressor would come on and off veRy sparticly. hasn't done that sense either. Actually after work tonight my car wasn't even siting low like it has been. It was a very normal height and once again No battery light. But I have been being very nice to the battery since I got the news of my alternator I.e No radio, air, sunroof, windows and very minimal turning signals

I had mine rebuilt by a shop I trusted, must be the shop because it left me with a light show and a stalled car.

I Put in a 130 amp Cobra.

It's too bad the light show doesn't last longer than what it does. It sure is pretty....... until it dies.:)

Seriously, I never want to see another light show again. I may have an AZ alternator and it might last me for 2 more days or 5 more years but the good part is that if I ever see my battery light on again, I never have to worry about the lack of AZ's on the corners of almost every city. The tools needed to change the alternator are always kept in my spare tire tub, along with a pull bar for the belt and an extra belt. So in other words, if I see a battery light, I'm not looking to pull money out of pocket to swap it out. I'm just looking for the nearest AZ, which is very easy.

Does a crown Vic alternator work in a mark with out any modification? My local pull yard doesn't have a mark one
