Almost bought a 2006 LS Sport

In looking for a car for my wife to replace her 94 Cougar, I came across a 2006 LS Sport, fully loaded. THe seller was asking 11+. I talked with him about the car and showed the wife. She thought it was nice. The following day the seller asked if I would be willing to buy it for 10. He said he was buying a new Explorer and the dealer wanted to know if he was going to trade the LS in or not. So he offered me the car (I am sure higher than the dealer was going to give him) for 10, I went to drive it, it was fine. I went home and talked to the wife about the car. I had her sold, but then I ran an auto check on the car and found the car had a shady past. It's 1st year, some 30+ miles were put on it. It was then turned in some years later and sent to Auction in Phoenix. Auction? Anyway, I would have been the 5th owner. For 10k I was not comfortable with the history. So we decided to look elsewhere.

Last night at the Casino the wife sees a Caddy DTS, silver with black landau roof.

Were looking at Caddy's now.
 
Auctions don't necessarily mean shady. Sometimes people can't afford the car and it gets repossessed. First car I ever owned I bought at an auction. As long as it wasn't in any serious accidents I would've been ok with that. 10k is a lot, what was the mileage?

This, mine was in an auction as well. First owner didn't keep up on payments.
 
On this 1994 Cougar, where are you, what are you wanting for it and what condition is it in? I may know someone who is interested.

Funny you should ask.

Just did the top end from a coolant leak (what's new - third time is a charm) and the car is running excellent.

The wife said to hang on to the Cougar for now since it is running so well again. The Cougar itself was a total that was sold as a repo. Insurance records where "lost" according to State Farm so it was never listed as totaled. We have had the car 15 years. Been everywhere in that car. Still looks good too.

Hi JJ,
No, Auctions don't mean a death sentence, but at $10k, I won't even touch it. A shady history can mean problems for me down the road. For that price, I want to know where the car has been, who owned it and how it was taken care of.

The car has 73k+ on it. Not bad, but like I said... $10k is way too much for the car.

Nice looking LS you have!

At $7.5k I would have jumped on it.

My Town Car did not have a great history, but I did not pay an arm and a leg for it either. Best car I ever owned. My Mark was a one family car, bought and owned here in my town. But I have replaced everthing on it just due to age. It had 73k on it when I bought it 3 years ago which just goes to show that low miles don't mean much either.

10k isn't a bad price if it's clean and has some options
 
That many miles and auction could have been a lease as well. $10k for 73k miles might be a little on the high side for a car you are not comfortable with, though.
 
I paid 8500 for my mine 3 months ago had just over 100k on it and 2 owners, other than the normal things it was in excellent condition
 
My experience

I bought my 05LSV8 sport at auction in Houston two months ago, it was indeed a repossession and I got it for 8200$ it only had 47k mi on it. It's probably one of the cleanest I've ever seen inside and out. I had an 04 a while back this is my second. 10k isn't an unusually high number for that car even w the miles I just got a good deal. You can always tell if a car has been wrecked, check the gaps and spots in the paint to be inconsistent. Fixed cars are never the same. I'd say as long as none of that is obvious and the title is clear your alright
