Has anybody done any mods to there air intake box that are proven to actually increase horsepower?
I did on mine. I think I removed the silencer screen, and cut out most of the box. I also ran modified spark plugs so the ground electrode sat over roughly 90% of the anode, and rounded the edges off the ground and beveled the edge back. Some modern plugs are like that now, or at least similar. Was an old Drag Racing trick back in the 60's and 70's. Was known to free up about 5 hp on smaller V-8's like the Ford 289. In practice, when gunning it, it responds quicker and reduces hesitation as the spark isn't obstructed, and might free up a fraction of MPG number. Just doing an airbox by itself won't do much, if anything, other than sounding a little meaner underhood.
See the How To Articles for the mod I put together.
