I have an 02 Lincoln LSE V6 with 104k miles. The ac has been giving me trouble. It will blow hot for a while, then make a hissing noise, and start blowing cold. It is not a gradual cool down by any means. The transition from hot to cold sometimes takes 2 minutes from start up and other times 20. The hissing noise pretty much occurs every time this happens- it almost sounds like an intake leak when it makes that noise. When the air goes cold, it does blow pretty cold. Any ideas? I am running an electric fan in place of the hydraulic set up.

That hissing noise is the electric motors controlling the vents. Try keeping it on one setup like, feet and dash or just dash.

As for the sudden changes, it may be a failing DCCV (Dual Climate Control Valve)

You can also try recharging your A/C or checking what the pressure is on your compressor. If you do have a gauge to check it, it should be between 34 - 36 PSI for optimal performance.
