Does anyone know if you can add a cd changer to 1996 Town Car the current factory radio only has a cassette player. Would I have to change the factory radio or can the existing radio control a factory CD Changer. The current radio does not seem to have any buttons that say CD. I wanted to see if I could locate a CD changer in the junk Yard. I know that the CD changer was an option for that year.
If your factory radio is capable of controling a factory or good aftermarker CD changer it will have a CD button. If you have a JBL premium sound system, the CD button should be midway between the top and bottom and on the far right side. If your radio
does have the CD button, and you choose the factory CD changer make sure you also get the facotry cable. You can also find factory replacement CD changers made to fit your specific car at Circuit City. Circuit City also has the cables necessary to connect other standard aftermarket changers to your factory system (CD changer capable) and these standard aftermarket CD changers are usually cheeper. Not sure, but I would guess that other places such as best buy would also have these items.
Without the CD control button, you will either need to replace the head unit as well, or as mentioned by others, use a CD changer that uses the FM radio waves. If quality sound is important to you, then stay away from the FM radio wave changers. What you save in installation time, will cost you in sound quality. If the standard factory radio and speaker system in your car sounded ok to you, then you might do fine with the FM radio wave changer. You might want to visit a nearby Circuit City or Best Buy and listen to the difference before you shell out the money. Be sure to use the cheapest set of speakers they have, as this will be the best match to the sound quality of the factory speakers.
And just in case you did not know it, if you choose to buy a new aftermarker head unit, you will also need to replace the factory speakers. This is because aftermarker head units put out upto 10 times more power than a factory unit. It will blow the factory speakers within a very short period of time, if not immediately.
