accelerating problem

I have problem with my Mark VIII. When I press pedal on the floor the RPM down, sometimes car die.. appear check engine light. Computer says that O2 sensor is damaged. It's possible that is the cause of this problem?

year? mileage? mods? maintenance? etc.
